Car cannot be leased in another state?

Hi everyone,

A dealer located in Wisconsin offered me a lease deal on a car that aligned with my proposed terms.

As we were about to close on the deal, they informed me that they cannot lease it to me because they can only lease to residents of Wisconsin and Illinois (for some reason he can also do Illinois because it borders them).

I’m a Missouri resident.

Is this normal for leases?

Additional question - I have a friend in WI and one friend in IL, could they just lease the car under their name for me to drive it in Missouri?

I would just pay them back for all the costs of the lease of course.

Yes, many dealerships have restrictions or issues leasing out of state.

This is known as a strawman deal and is illegal and can get you in a bit of hot water.

Thank you for replying. This bummed me out because I worked on the deal for like 2 weeks and they eventually agreed to my terms but then this. :sleepy:

Maybe talk to a Broker here who does East / South areas and get delivery?

I reached out to Auto Ninja (or whatever their name is), they said they work only in NJ but are out of those cars that I’m looking for.

I also highly doubt that any broker will be able to get close to the deal that I got.

There aren’t many brokers working in Missouri or surrounding areas, except for Benedetto, who only does Volvo.

Try @AutoCompanion aka Clutch who is out of AZ and might know someone

What car are you looking for?

You dodged a bullet. No one in their right mind here brokers or signs garbage deals like VW’s.

Thanks, I messaged him.

What do you mean by that?

That VW cars are trash or that lease deals on them are trash?

I could agree with the latter, which makes me even more bummed out that I can’t sign this ppwk. because I worked on this deal for 2 weeks+.

You’d be surprised by the numbers I got probably.

It’s probably not only due to the border but the two states likely have some reciprocity agreements on certain terms that happen to be crucial in regards to automotive leases

Laws that impact leasing from banking, taxation, registration to liability, have major differences from state to state. It’s totally normal that dealers in some states simply cannot or will not do deals out of state.

That said if you negotiated a smoking deal, can you just purchase/finance it instead? Or was there some crazy lease cash, residual or money factor subvention at play? I’m guessing not since none of those things are negotiable (well MF markup is I guess).

Gotcha, thank you.

They said they’d finance it to me on a 72 period with 4.9%.
But doesn’t even come close to the lease deal that we already agreed on.

There is lease cash & a special subvented money factor on this car.

But the customer cash would also apply to financing on this car.

What you have asked the additional question is illegal.

Most of dealership would not deal with leasing out of state because of the hassle.

I don’t follow either, lol.

The deals are trash. Way overpriced for what you typically get.

@derekoh1991 , now that you’ve seen the quote-sheet on the car he was hacking, do you think the lease would be LH-worthy? This forum loves to mock people who lease ICE for some reason, but I think some good ones are out there.

Yeah, if he got so much discount on that vehicle, then yeah!

@mankizord - assuming you don’t come up with a business that has tax nexus in WI tomorrow, hopefully some other LH user can benefit from the deal.

I doubt anyone going to snatch the deal. Because they will bring the price right back up!
