Can't decide whether to lease or buy

24 month lease won’t qualify for cvrp rebate

Yeah minimum ownership period to qualify for the CVRP is 30 months.

Looks like the route to go is the EV lease since that’s the only way I’ll be able to get the most out of the federal EV incentive.

Does anyone have an update on when Ioniq leases will be back on again? Thing with the Ioniq lease is that no Hyundai incentives can be applied to it.
I would consider that and maybe the Chevy Bolt. What are the Chevy manufacturer incentives?
Any other EV lease that would be recommended?

This is a no brainer. You can get a Bolt for one pay of 8.3 to 8.7k, so you could easily find yourself paying a mere 30-40 a month effectively with Replace your Ride 7.5k rebate.

Looks like a finance PHd. Pays low taxes and gets the Govt to potentially fund his new car  Should be perfect working for Apple and all the other tax avoiders…

So because I pay (relatively) low taxes, you’re implying I’d like to be a tax avoider?

perhaps its because u haven’t responded

i am sure it was in jest…im sure u must of picked up on that …right?

So I’m leaning toward purchase of e-Golf se (2017) right now. Just because the total payment in a lease is pretty high anyway and this way it also leaves me flexible to get the model 3 if I want to, in about a year. I’ve got a dealership willing to sell one for 28.5k (with DCFC).
So with RYR (7500) CVRP (4500) and tax break (3000 or thereabouts because I don’t owe enough to get the full 7500 :frowning: then that comes to aboue 13.5k I have to take care of on my own. What do you guys think of that?

A tax avoider is not a tax evader. An avoider is someone who pays as little taxes as possible by careful planning …
Whether you like it or not, you are chasing every single incentive you can to buy a car you would not otherwise buy. Nothing wrong with that, only that’s what is wrong (potentially) with rebates and Replace your Ride type of schemes.

Rather than pay inflated e-golf prices for a fairly dismal car, I would think you are better off getting a regular high efficiency car and the 4k rebate. All you need is a 2010 or newer plug in. Which a nice off-lease Volt should get you (from just glossing over the RYR web-site). Why buy new? … …

Interesting thread. @rieuk what did you end up doing? If anything at all.

Yes, forgot to update.
I ended up purchasing the Prius Prime Premium, actually. The reasoning was that it was a cheaper car, but there were several other factors, the main one of which was lack of choice.

You see, RYR requires you to stick to the dealerships they have agreements with and who are listed on their website. It’s not very many which really limits your ability to play the dealers against each other and this just takes away your buying power. For example I was trying to get either the Ioniq or VW e-golf but there were only two VW and two Hyundai dealers that did RYR and they knew this. So they wouldn’t budge from MSRP and the Hyundai dealers were even jacking up their prices by almost $5k.

They do however have 5 toyota dealerships that they work with so after much frustration with the other dealerships I decided to go with the prius prime. It was definitely not my top choice, but hey I’m just looking for a car to get me through to the model 3 and the prius prime premium actually has a really nice interior (pretty important for me) at a good price.

The federal rebate is less on this car (PHEV) so I miss out on less of it. However the RYR incentive remains the same (whether PHEV or EV).

I decided on purchase since it would allow me to sell the car should the model 3 come around. I realize I would have to forfeit the CVRP if I did this (you need to keep it for a minimum of 30 months) but I figure I can at least break even. I got the 7500 RYR, 750 college grad incentive, failed to get the Uber drive incentive but got the 0.9% APR special that toyota have going on. Will have to apply for federal rebate come tax time (around 3k, which is my tax liability) and CVRP will be 3500. Selling price of the car was 27k.

PS. Just FYI anyone trying to do RYR. Having been through it - I don’t think it’s worth the hassle. I don’t know what it is but the people running this thing are giving out maybe 1 rebate per month or something like that. It’s quite ridiculous. I waited 7 months to get a response. After you secure a deal, it takes them at least a month to retrieve the money from the state. So I’m waiting now. Given the restrictions I was placed under in what I could and could not consider for a car, I am in serious doubt whether this thing was even worth going through.

Thanks for sharing. I remember looking at the Prius prime while back. Good car great interior.

Hey Rieuk,
I’ve also qualified for the RYR program and am looking to buying a Prime. I was wondering if 27K sale price on the premium was before subtracting the College grad and other incentives. Thank you.

Nice.

Yes, it was. Bear in mind it might be 4-5 weeks after you secure a deal until you actually take possession of the car.
