California lease/tax question

Hey guys,
Something is off here with how the tax is being calculated, and I can’t figure it out… I know you have keener eyes than mine, and I’d really appreciate your help!

Basically, I want to put $2k down, plus reg/doc/license/etc. The “sales tax” he refers to here is the part that confuses me. It’s already been added to the payment, so what is this $1,948? (I’m thinking this tax might be the total tax for the term of the lease, and it’s being added twice—both to the monthly payment and at signing. Could that be it?)

(from the dealer. MSRP of vehicle is $54,390)
“Yes so the $534+tax comes out to $584.43 with the $1948 in sales tax and the $638 in dmv fees. So again that’s $4564 total down and $584.43 including tax”

Thanks in advance for any help!!

First of all, you are being almost as cryptic as whoever sent you that response. What the heck are you talking about?

What kind of car are you trying to lease?
What are the other details of the deal?
That is, the selling price, rebate, MF, etc. (really I don’t need all of it only the rebate if any, I am just nosy)?

In California, tax on a lease is charged on the monthly payment and any cap reduction. So, of the “$1,948 in sales tax” you mentioned, about $155-$180 of that is because of the “$2K down” you alluded to. The only way there would be additional tax is if you were getting a rebate of some sort.

Are you? Details, man.

i dont have the other numbers for RV and MF… but basically this should kind of explain it… this is the whole… down + drives + dmv fees + all the things + this + bullshit = payment

A lot of lease contracts show all the sales tax over the term in one lump sum. $1,948 sure looks like that number for a 36 month lease, since each month’s tax is about $50.43. 36 x $50.43 = $1,815.48. Leaves room for tax on any cap cost reduction, doc fee, etc.

Thank you all… and sorry for the cryptic post. I was trying to get a post up before I went into a meeting and didn’t realize how vague it was. It’s an Alfa Stelvio. He explained the breakdown and it makes sense now.

Thanks again!
