Hi All - I just took over the lease of a 2018 M3 CS and need to register the vehicle in my name. The previous owner’s registration is paid through 2/2021. Was curious to know if I’ll be able benefit from that paid thru date or if CA will double dip when I register. He paid almost $1,000 when he renewed his registration which means I’ll probably be hit with something similar I assume if they don’t consider the amount already paid. Ouch!
If you are in Calif. the DMV will allow the paid registration through 2/2021.
You will not have to pay it.

There is a $15 transfer fee, that’s it.

Thanks guys! Best news all week! Actually, maybe second to that Stage 3 completion email. On a related note, does anyone know if the person on the registration needs to be present during the registration? Was hoping to send my wife as I’m buried with work right now.
Just go to AAA if you are a member…no waiting, or find a DMV self serve KISOK at some grocery stores…DMV is backed up and you need an appointment-which could be 10 days plus… You have 10 days to transfer the vehicle in your name.
Also, check online-you may be able to just upload everything without an office visit

Great info! The transfer package says that it needs to be within 30 days but perhaps they are not considering CA specifically. I will look into all of that. I am a AAA member as well. Thanks!
Yes, technically they give you 30 days to pay all fees, but the 10 day is a rule without penalties etc
I don’t think they do appointments anymore unless a in person visit is required (Real ID etc) so best bet either try online or AAA
