[CA] How do I avoid paying DMV registration fee twice on a lease buyout?

I’m in CA. The annual DMV registration fee for my leased Chevy Bolt EUV of $567 is due this week. I plan to buy back my leased vehicle this August (when the lease matures). I presume that I’d have to pay the $567 registration fee again along with all the taxes and fees. How do I avoid paying the registration fee of $567 twice to the DMV?

Anyone been through this process before?

You won’t pay a second annual reg fee on buy out. Fee is paid 1x yearly regardless of who owns it. Might be a title transfer fee though.

I don’t think you will have to register it again as only the owner on title is changing and not the registrant, and the car will have good registration already.

Taxes and fees at buyout are another matter.

When you receive the released title, be sure to actually retitle the car in your name.

Does it really cost $567 to renew a registration for 1yr, on no less than, a Chevy Bolt? WTF?

Dont worry, in CA the registration ridiculous regardless of if its an ev.

One thing CA doesn’t ask for is a Property tax on the car each year though.

I believe there’s an additional $100 surcharge for EV registrations in CA

Bro I drive the same car and mine was $658 a month ago

Mine is a 2022 maybe that’s why, first year paying tags.

My Camry CA tags are only $160. But it is also 18 yrs old. Tag prices go down every year like said above.

Good to hear. Thanks.
