I’m currently in the market for a new car and I’ve narrowed down my options to two models: the C40 and the Q4. I’ve done my fair share of research, but I believe hearing from fellow LH’ers who have/had personal experiences or insights on these vehicles can help me and others who are interested in these cars.
If any of you have owned or test-driven either the C40 or the Q4 e, I would greatly appreciate your input. Here are a few specific areas I’m interested in:
Performance and Handling: Aside from horsepower (C40 402hp vs Q4 295hp), are there any noticeable differences in terms of maneuverability?
Range and Charging: As electric vehicles, I’m particularly interested in how each model fare in terms of real-world range, availability of charging infrastructure and were there any noticeable change in charging speed from when you first got the vehicle?
Interior Comfort and Features: Are there any notable differences in terms of interior comfort, cabin space, technology features, or overall ergonomics? Any specific pros or cons you’d like to highlight?
Reliability and Maintenance: If you’ve owned either of these models for a significant amount of time, how has the reliability been? Have you faced any major maintenance or repair issues?
Overall Satisfaction: Lastly, if you had to summarize your experience with either the C40 or the Q4, how would you rate your overall satisfaction with the vehicle? Are there any standout positives or negatives that influenced your opinion?
I understand that personal preferences and priorities may differ, but hearing your experiences and insights would be invaluable in helping me and hopefully other members in weighing the pros and cons of these two models.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts and opinions.
Only can comment on C40 have had for 2 months. I’ve never charged above 90% but that gives me an estimated 230-240 miles, seems to be pretty accurate.
Incredibly fast and with AWD there is no wheel spin.
Interior features are consistent with the rest of the Volvo Plus range. Infotainment has worked well on mine with no faults. Front seats are very comfortable. Rear seat is not comfortable unlike any other Volvo I have had.
For the 2 months I’ve had it there have been no issues.
Lease was awesome. was a great way to try and see if an ev is my thing or not.
Thank you for sharing your feedback on the C40! I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying your ownership experience so far and knowing that you haven’t encountered any issues with the car is a definite plus. Have you noticed any steering wheel vibrations at higher speeds?
I know of a previous MY21Q4 owner who now drives a c40 mentioned that the infotainment system is better on the Volvo, and the front seats are much more comfortable. I’ll get to see it for myself for comparison during my test drive at Audi today.
I can feel the slightest steering wheel vibration but not enough to be concerned about it.
CarPlay is normal CarPlay, only difference between this google system and the sensus on my 19 XC90 is this new one is full screen CarPlay. I do prefer old Volvo sensus but that can be because 4 other spa cars family has had have been sensus and the 70k miles I’ve done in XC90 made me very comfortable with it.
Yes, steering wheel vibration around 65 mph. Goes away above that or with slight easing of the accelerator. I might not have even noticed it if not aware of it from online threads. Definitely wouldn’t notice in my diesel compared to overall vibration in that car.
No knowledge of a Q4 but the C40 controls, nav, and seats seem great. Would like more physical knobs but the screen controls seem logical enough. Google nav is great and some owners seem to think better than ABRP for locating chargers and predicting charge level at destination.
Also some mention concerns about no shade on pano roof and poor rear visibility. Tint on pano is very heavy and rear visibility is no where near as bad as I expected (mostly cuts out top portion of upper half of normal view compared to other cars).
Any of you have kids in car seats in the C40? Currently, I have a 4 year old forward facing, but my wife has begun the let’s have another baby conversation. So, how would a rear facing car seat fair?
I’ve got both in my driveway at the moment. Q4 is my brother’s and I’ve got the C40 for a few months via Care By Volvo. The C40 is much faster and slightly cheaper but I’d go with a Q4 every time over the C40. The Q4 has wireless CarPlay so it’s less of a hassle to use. The C40 has AAOS with wired CarPlay. If you have an Android phone, it might actually be a little better for you. I like AAOS and that it has built-in apps that don’t require plugging in my phone. But the C40 infotainment is a little limited and can feel like an old Android tablet at times.
The C40 also has the charging port in the same location as Teslas so if you happen to use one of the Magic Dock Superchargers, it’s much more convenient than the Q4. That’s still pretty niche though.
Otherwise, the Q4 has more usable space. C40 rear visibility is terrible, even worse than my Model 3. My C40 also has the steering wheel vibration so test drive the actual unit you’re interested in. It’s very apparent as soon as you reach high way speeds.
