Evening everyone, my question revolves around buying a 2014-16 USED/CPO Porsche Cayenne or X5 Diesel. Has anyone had experience with either of these two in regards to maintenance, reliability, and overall cost of ownership? High mileage feedback is a plus, as I plan on driving approx. 25k a year for the very long future. I’m choosing diesel for a myriad of reasons, mainly mpg’s and convenience associated with it. I understand that most modern diesels will require some sort of DEF and I’ll plan on performing almost all simple maintenance requirements. I’m mainly trying to gauge what will be the most logical long-term option, as I’ll plan to keep the vehicle as long as it doesn’t need a full overhaul. Other vehicles in the close consideration DIESEL pool are Jeep GC Summit, Audi Q7, VW Touareg, and another mid-size luxury diesel I can’t recall at the moment.
From what I’ve read, MB diesels are pretty bulletproof. I don’t think I’ve heard good things about BMW or Porsche out of warranty TBH. I’d look at an M-Class or a GL
Air suspension on the Porsche is an expensive fix. BMWs are unreliable. You’ll pass the 50k miles of warranty in a flash. Your fuel savings with diesel will be small. DEF will eat up a lot of the saved money. Lots of “small” repairs costing $2000 each, like oil leaks. If I were going to drive 25k a year and wanted an SUV, I’d go for an Acura, Toyota, or Lexus without a turbo. Subaru if there’s snow.
Diesels are great for towing in trucks. They seemed great in the VW TDIs until you realized they were killing people with their smog. None of these diesel SUVs makes a damned bit of sense. None of them at all.
The Mercedes historically have been more reliable, but we’re talking 1980s 300SDs, not modern cars with direct injection, high pressure fuel pumps, DEF, and all that complexity.
Some great responses, now I’m debating the diesel choice… Sometimes you just gotta hear someone else say what your thinking in order to believe it. Damn.
I owned a preowned 2012 X5 35d. Bought it with 41k miles and sold it this summer with 72k.
Honestly, one of the best cars out of the 50 I have had. The truck was much more reliable than other BMWs, and the fuel economy and the torque is frankly addicting. People complain about DEF changes, and yes at the dealer it is very pricey. However, the last time I needed to add some I just went by AutoZone and picked up a container for 15.99. Lasts a little more than 12k miles.
I did buy an extended warranty with mine, but never had to use it. I sold it once I got an amazing lease on a new E300, but I do regret it given how much I loved my X5.
Personally, I’d get a CPO RX450h. Being a Lexus, it will have essentially no problems and you’ll get the fuel economy benefit of a hybrid. The hybrid version is also speedier IIRC.
