Buy F-150 or Lease a New One? Or Chevy/RAM

Hi all – Currently leasing a 2019 F-150 XLT, super crew, V8 with 24k on the clock in central NJ (07724). Already extended the lease once and need to decide to buy it at the end of the month, lease a new one or (the wild card) switch to a Ram.

For the purposes of this post, I’d like to get your feedback on buying it outright. Here are the numbers the dealer gave me:

Selling Price: $31K
Dealer Fee: $800  this sounds like bs to me
Tax: $2,100
Non Tax Fees: $200  don’t even know what this is

Seems like a good deal but I’m working with a couple dealers on a new F-150 and a Ram. My current payment is $390 and w/$1,600 down. My questions are:

  • Is this buyout good or even too good to pass up?
  • Are there comparable trucks out there in today’s market where I can get the same deal?

Sorry in advance if I’m missing key info in this post!

First off, are you happy with your F-150? My 2019 has been still at the dealership with 36k miles needing a new transmission, so I’m a little jaded right now.

Selling price seems to be in-line - if not lower - for a clean XLT at private party / dealer pricing.

Overall, I’m happy with the truck. I’ve leased 2 Rams and 1 Tundra previously. Each had their pro’s and con’s. Sorry to hear about your trans…I had to have one replaced on one of the Rams at 7,500 miles so don’t feel too bad. One of the reasons I like to lease is because I don’t want to be stuck with a big repair bill and Ford’s don’t have the best reputation these days.

I really like my F-150, but I’ve had 4 recalls so far and Ford cannot provide me a replacement transmission ETA as it’s backordered. It could be months before I get it back. It seems to be a systemic quality issue as of late at Ford.

If you are on the fence on buying out the F-150, then I think you know what to do.

Good advice my friend. I just got a quote from the dealership I got the truck from for a comparable F-150….$639 with $0 down. Are they nuts? Seriously, I’d be paying about as much to lease a new truck for 3 years as I would to buy this one. Time to start looking closely at the Ram. So much for “Truck Month”!

Ram or GM diesel 1500s

those are the only discounted trucks

ford dealers are on crack

For sure, especially since this is supposed to be Ford’s “Truck Month” and I’m eligible for $3,500 in incentives. I guess they need to pay for their $2B loss last year somehow.

On the Chevy website they list a 2023 Silverado 1500 (2FL) with a (gulp) 2.7L turbo for $399/36 months w/$3,579 due at signing. I don’t plan on putting down any money but let’s play along.

All things being equal, what would this same deal look like after applying a Supplier Discount? Apologies in advance if there isn’t enough detail. Just trying to get a sense how much of a savings might be.

If you are able to get a dealer to play ball and offer supplier with no other conditions (bumping MF, add-ons, etc.) then figure approx. 4-5% off for the supplier discount. So I believe that ad is based on a 53k sticker, so roughly $2500 off which likely offsets a good chunk of your taxes and fees. Without running the calc, you’re probably still looking at 399/month with roughly $1000 or so down.

Side note - the 2.7L is a solid motor in the truck. I had a rental with it for a weekend and it felt perfectly adequate.

Ford dealerships aren’t on crack. They are the Apple of the auto industry. For every one guy chasing a crazy deal they have 10 guys buying the trucks for cash.

I have a 22 Ram that I ordered last year. $499, 36/12, 1500 including first due at singing, 64k truck. Before I placed the order I drove the F150 5.0, and Silverado 5.3. I can not tell you how much better the ride is on the Ram. I ordered with air springs and the 5.7 pulls so well. The cabin is also well above that of the GM and i believe about the same as the Ford. It has 10k on it now and haven’t had any issues. Highly recommend the Ram over the otheres. You can get coupons on the ram website as well. There are deals to be had.

Great info and that’s exactly the type of deal that I’m looking for. Love 'em or hate 'em, you can’t deny the fact that Ram gives you a lot of truck for the money. I leased two Ram’s, back to back, but Ford had better deals in my area at the time my last lease was up.

My F150 has treated me well and I never had a problem with it. My lease is up though and it’s time to find a replacement. Ford, at least at moment, seems to have priced themselves out of the market when it comes to lease prices.

I just went through this exact process in December. 2019 xlt supercrew 25k miles. I extended as long as I could when I realized that around 90-95% of my payment went to lowering my residual. I ended up buying out at $25,000 plus $2k for fees/taxes. I had used the a plan and my lease was $399 with 0 down.
I have the 10spd transmission and haven’t had any issues with it. Even with the equity I have in it and using the a plan, I can’t find a deal close to my previous lease or the current price I bought it for. Ram might be an option with some of the upcoming specials. Ps- the all aluminum body is a great idea but I’m convinced a swift wind will dent it.

I leased a diesel Silverado 1500 4x2 LT last Feb 2022.

I’m surprised at the mileage I get, about 23-25 city and 30+ highway (as high as 37 for one stretch).

The bad thing is diesel is more expensive than regular gas… about $4+ compared to $5.50+ (in SoCal).

The Ram has a better ride though (rear coil vs leaf suspension) but their diesel was more expensive (at the time). Not sure now because seems like Rams are more incentivized.

Good luck to @LizKin
