Broken Regulator with aftermarket window? Lease due in 3 months what would you do?

Hey Guys,

Last week my Driver’s Side window regulator failed on my 2019 Audi Q7 and Lease ends in May. I took it to Audi and they said it was covered under warranty.

AUDI dealership is asking me to pay 717 dollars to replace the window because in Dec of 2022 my Driver’s Side Window was shattered overnight by someone, which, I had it replaced by a no-name window company. The aftermarket window had been there since Dec 2022 and just now the window regulator failed in Jan 2024.

Audi is saying that the Window Regulator does not fit to the aftermarket window that is installed???

What are my options? Do i have to fix it? Can I just ride out until my lease ends in May and not pay the 700 dollars?

Thanks,
Jay

If the new regulator is cheaper than $717 to replace at a no name car repair facility vice dealership, then no brainier get it replaced. Or check ebay/FB marketplace for used part and get it installed at any repair store. For example, if any of my leases, needed new tires I purchased used ones with 85% tread. Save hundreds of dollars. An example, my last Lexus I purchased four used tires for less than $200 balanced and installed. Just did the same for friends BMW X7. Dealership wanted $1200 for new tires and I got him used (better brand with 95% tread) for $225. New owner will have practically new tires.

Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, perhaps you can swap it out yourself. Did it on a BMW once, wasn’t too complicated.

As long as you can live with it for 3 months then you can always ride it out, at least until you get your inspection.

Schedule your lease end inspection as soon as you can and just see what the damage charge will be for an inop window. I think the inspectors check that but if not I would point out that “one window doesn’t work” and just see what they say.

Loosely related story but I lost a key to my SQ5 lease a few years back, dealer wanted $550 to replace, I waited until I got the inspection and a missing key was something like a $125 charge. No brainer to just turn it in and pay the damage rather than replacing it.

Window regulars can take up to maybe 30 minutes to change, the hardest part is getting the door panel off.
