Bought a future lemon (2023 Tundra)

Picked up a gently used 2023 Tundra Platinum 4x4 a couple weeks back. Price was around $55 and they gave me $5k higher than anyone else on trading my Land Cruiser. Plus they were local, easy to deal with.

I was deciding between this and a used Platinum/Limited F150. Ultimately the tundra won slightly in the seat comfort department (only truck I know of with thigh extenders). It’s fast enough, drives a lot like my old gen 2 raptor. Ride quality is half decent with the multi link rear suspension. MPG is trash ironically even though they ditched the 5.7 for being a hog. And the hybrid option I pretty much ruled out due to every review saying it wasn’t faster and was barely more efficient (also you lose rear seat storage). This truck checked every box for me. Although the powerboost definitely felt more stout.

Yes, it was literally days before the recall came out. I know there was already talk of these engines having issues, but I didn’t really care that much. I got two more years of warranty. But no denying it’s definitely lost value since the recall news broke, which is annoying.


Went ahead and got it leveled, put on 35” KO2’s, and installed running boards.

I know trucks aren’t big on this forum recently but sharing anyway. I’m tired of EV’s (still have my eqs lol).

Very nice! I ended up with the 23 ram limited just due to the discount (18%ish off) and has all the bells and whistles; will probably keep this one ‘forever’. Wife really wanted the panoramic roof shrug

The Rams are great. I had a 22 ram limited briefly. The air ride is no joke. And the 5.7 hemi is a glorious engine. I thought about getting another one but ultimately wanted to try something new

these also tanked in value lmao, but given inventory supply, not shocking I guess. How are you doing with mpg? If I am not an idiot and cruise at 70, I can get away with 18-20 on a good summer day. Also, the lane assist is trash, does a horrible job overall honestly.

The 25s look like they have some updated systems there. Should be an interesting comparison to see if it’s better.

I average around 14.5. Mostly city driving. And yeah the lane assist is useless in the ram. New ones have actual lane centering but no hemi.

Get rid of the levels, put a lift kit. Your doing more harm to axles and ball joints

I seriously don’t understand how gas mileage is so bad on the 3.5 TT non-Hyb tundra

I was scoring 12-16 MPGs, extreme heat temps, it was a rental with 6kish miles

Rear wheels would spin all the time. I’d totally agree the power boost is truly a great engine combo, it’s not reliable from what I have read on forums but it puts power way better

Yikes! I had that on a car that showed up 2 years later with a dirty carfax (didn’t have it when I bought it)

But Lemon and Used don’t go together. Once used, most lemon laws go poof.

Yeah it really is comical how bad the mpg is. I honestly think a tune would help a lot for mpg and just overall smoothness. But I’m not risking voiding any warranty lol

Not in CA. Any car still under the manufacturer’s warranty (bought from a dealer as well maybe?) can be a lemon.

“The California Lemon Law covers new and used vehicles sold or leased in California that come with the manufacturer’s new vehicle warranty. If the manufacturer or dealer can’t repair a serious warranty defect in your vehicle after a reasonable number of repair attempts, the manufacturer must either replace the vehicle or refund its purchase price (whichever you prefer).”

Maybe the Magnusson-Moss (federal) allows for that as well?

When the car is new, a lemon is easy.
When you hit ‘used’, the lemon law gets real murky.
My Lemon Lawyer was pretty hesitant once my ‘new car’ was over a year, he even mentioned that to me. (And I’m in CA)

And your point is moot since he is in FL.

You made a blanket statement that said “most” as to used cars, and my comment was directed to CA specifically.

In CA, there is nothing “murky” about the law even if your “Lemon Lawyer” was “hesitant” to do anything.

The point is not “moot” when you use words like “most” as if it applies across the board.

California has some of the strongest pro-consumer laws in the USA when it comes to automobiles. Florida is basically the opposite. But I think the respective voter groups like it this way. Since consumer protection laws are often seen as government overreach that negatively harms businesses.

It’s not just the lemon laws either. In California, dealers actually have to offer pricing on vehicles and attempt to honor that pricing (especially when it’s VIN-specific). In Florida, it seems dealers can just make up any number they want to entice buyers into the showroom, then do whatever BS they can pull off to maximize their profits.

Being said, I agree with the general sentiment that once a vehicle is used, no Florida buyer will be able to get help from a lemon law since Florida lawmakers felt the lemon laws should only apply to the new vehicle buyers.

That’s why I said ‘Most’.
But in regards to CA, if you didn’t buy it from a Dealer, you lose lemon law protection.

With all of that said, even the language you quoted illustrates the need to be aware of details and be specific. It says “retailer” and not “dealer.”

No, I did not look up the definition of “retailer” at this point.

No skin in this game, but maybe Florida is an outlier? Maybe more states will cover it?
