BMW X7 / GLS 450 / XC90 : lease , buy, CPO

Hi,

Newbie here on leasing.
Location: Nor Cal

I have few questions. Looking for expert advice.
Looking to buy BMW X7 or GLS 450

  1. Do you recommend lease or buy of BMW X7 , Benz GLS 450

  2. is it possible to lease previous year car for these models ? If yes, do you recommend this ?
    Are there any advantages

  3. which are the websites you use to find previous year car inventory in your area ?

Somebody tag Will Farrell.

Edit found him @Brokejetflyer

  1. Look up the programs and see if leasing has rebates/rate programs that are favorable. Also do some research to see if any vehicle discounts are possible. If none of these apply then purchase and do NOT lease.

  2. You can lease whatever you want. Payments are going to suck on anything that isn’t sold as new/demo with a program in place. I do NOT recommend this if there is no support from the manufacturer.

  3. I use cargurus and autotrader.

Based on your last post you were interested in a CX90. That’s honestly a much better value proposition than new/used/lease on a GLS or X7.

What’s your budget? How long do you normally keep your cars? You might be better off purchasing the GLS and leasing the BMW.

Take a look at broker deals in the Marketplace.

There is no lease support for 2022 models. You might still be able to lease 2023 models in January or February 2024. It is up to the manufacturer, though. Once lease support ends, it does not normally make sense to lease a previous year model.

You could start with a Google search for used cars. There are multiple websites out there, but the top 3 sites should come up in your search.

"favorable " part is grey area for me  so trying to figure out

GLS 450 is expensive than X7 , feature wise both are similar

I am hesitant to make purchase now because after 3 years , it might be difficult to sell car in electric / hybrid dominated market

Yea, I started with CX-90. but now I own CX-5 for last 8 years. So thinking of "upgrading " to next level. Hence I was looking at x7 and 450. Cx-90 is good but not as great as driving x7 , GLS 450 ( obvious). I am not going to sell CX5 . So I am still debating whether to have 2 Mazda at home.
Of course cost wise x7 and GLS 450 are bad decisions. So all these debates happening

I want to keep 3-4 years on German cars as I don’t want to experience bigger maintenance worries of German cars long term

I can stretch budget to include these German cars. But financially I am not supporting this decision. But having luxury experience, I need to do a trade off on this. ( I was having Mazda CX5 all these years )

As Benz also moving towards electric vehicles, I am worried whether I will be able to sell GLS after 4 years at good price if I purchase it now . After 3-4 years it will be electric dominated market ( I assume )

leasing a car at this price point without decent rebates (like EVs have these days) is just not a good enough deal that can be considered a “hack”.

If you plan to own any of these two rides longer than 3/4 years, I’d buy a 1-2yo model before end of the year.

The market has dropped on these and there’s plenty of inventory.

I just bought a 22 X7 for the wife this month… and the price was about $4k lower than last month.

And if you’re looking X7 vs GLS… the X7 always seems to edge out in reviews. Personally the x7 is the nicest driving large SUV I’ve ever tried. I can’t think of anyone that has regretted it.

EDIT: my value-prop is if you’re paying cash. I haven’t compared leasing new versus the used price at today’s rates. But I’d venture a credit union rate before end of year on a $60-70k purchase isn’t too terrible. And your recapture on the resale after 3/4 years will be less painful.

It will not be difficult to sell an ICE suv in 3-4 years

Then get something that is within your budget.

Define “good price”. In a normal market expect it to be worth around 50% of what you paid in 4 years.

Don’t really recommend stretching budgets. Also sensing you’re a little tired of your CX5.

One possibility of experiencing some luxury + a 3-row SUV in a two car garage: lease a CX90/Palisade as the SUV and trade in your CX5 for something like a 2023 Mercedes E-class (they are trying to clear out the remaining 23s and I wouldn’t be surprised if you can get 12% off before 12/31).

If you want budget, 3 row, a used Volvo XC90 is worth a look next to that CX9.

Dublin Volvo had a 2021 T6 Inscription with like 20k on the clock for $45k. Can probably get them to go lower if you’re buying before EoY so they don’t have to keep carrying this slug into 2024.

It’ll be way cheaper than a GLS or X7… but a used CX-9 will still be cheaper.

Brand new PHEV preferred plus is 48k. Then it doesn’t make sense to buy 20k miles XC90 for 45k. Right ?
Not interested in CX-9 as I won’t find much difference as compared to CX5 . Similarly I am not interested in regular CX-90

I will be able to sell but How much loss I have to bear is still unknown
Nobody predicted such high boom in electric car sale in last 2 years. So you never know.

That is why to be safe, I am opting for lease. ( My first car was financed one )

Why not XC90?

XC-90 Looks elegant from outside
But drawbacks I felt is that,

  • plugin hybrid is too expensive
  • interior style is not modern ( very conservative previous Gen style ) . Dash board is meh :expressionless:

If electric vehicles are so much in demand, then why are manufacturers and dealers applying huge discounts to them? If something is in such high demand, there will not be discounts. Economics 101.

Hence, new ICE GLSs going for MSRP or MSRP+

Yeah, buyers who get EV right now get to take advantage of money automakers have to put in to clear their over-supply, and the taxpayers are chipping in as well.

It’s unlikely we’ll see this level of bargain on really nice vehicles for a while. And by really nice vehicle, I mean one that isn’t a stark minimalist/drab interior comprised of thin seats, a laggy iPad, rattley trim, and a rattley dashboard.

Between the two I’d take the new CX90 PHEV over the used XC90.

You are safe when you get a good lease. Otherwise, like the $1,200 GLE450e and X5e folks, you are just being “safe” by locking in an overpaid price.
