In SF Bay Area, looking to either lease a 2024 BMW x3 M40 or cash purchase CPO 2022 or 2023 of same model. Will likely want something new again in ~3-4 years, drive ~12,000mi/yr, Tier 1 credit.
MSRP on my desired 2024 build is $68970. Finding same spec 2022 CPOs w/ <20k miles listed for $51k and 2023’s for $59k (assuming I could get enough discount to negate sales tax.)
Leasing seems the safest plan but am I crazy to consider the CPO? Seems like in 3yrs, I could sell it/ trade it into next purchase, get $30-40k for it, and therefore be out of pocket $20-30k vs. $35-40k on a lease?
Sidenote: 2025 X3 M40 is a new redesign (2022-24 are same cars.) I’m guessing this will affect 2022-24 pricing + resale value in similar manners, but dealers might be more willing to deal on 2024 once 2025 is launched.
Option 3: buy a non-CPO that’s within the 4yr/50k new car warranty and extend it with BMW Platinum (which is a higher level of coverage than CPO)
Thats just par for the course. Every 3 years or so there’s either an LCI refresh or a brand new model—it doesn’t change what your expectation of resale value is.
Giving this a bump with some links to calculators for projected deals. Looking for feedback on this comparison: leasing a 2024 BMW X3 M40 36mo/12k mi vs buying 2022 BMW X3 M40 CPO with cash then reselling after 36mo. Lease 2024 BMW X3 M40: 2022 BMW X3 M40 CPO Purchase:
Meh, have you driven SQ5? Great car, and very different from M40. They’re “comparable” in the same way that Golden Delicious and Pink Lady apples are comparable.
I reserve the right to eventually end up in a SQ5, bc the deals are indeed much better lol. But I’m going from two cars (M340i sedan and A4 Allroad wagon) down to one and the SQ5 just looks and feels a bit “soft” compared to the X3 M40i.
So I’m looking for input on the deals I shared, thanks Mostly curious to hear if I’m missing something on the CPO purchase as the BMW lease seems strong for a BMW.
I wouldn’t rule a '21 out. Pre-LCI exhaust does sound a bit better but their tech is a bit more clunky and I am leery of the resale value. Three years from now, that’s a 6 yr old car, and with 25 starting a new generation, it starts to get pretty dated. Of course, I’d also be owning the thing free and clear for only ~$8k more than a 3yr lease on a 24…
Yes, but taking my time: seeing some loaded 2022’s w/low mileage for ~$50k and have to imagine lease deals will continue to improve once they reveal 2025. (that will be a tight window, I know, but there should be some.)
