BMW out of state/transfer

Kind of unique situation. Looking at leasing from out of state, driving a few months, and then transferring when I no longer need which would be a max of maybe 3 months possibly 4.

Paying a year of reg is painful for a short period and I am wondering if I were to not do that, if I would encounter an issue with BMWFS when going to transfer.

You live in CA, you’re leasing out of state, and what do you envision allows you to drive that lease in month 3 if you don’t register with CA? Resident of another state? They won’t send (new) temp tags if a registration isn’t in progress.

The car has to be titled and registered somewhere for the time you’re driving it. You could do a 100% sign and drive and let the registration (which follows the car anyway) be part of the deal/transfer. If you roll the 1st year reg into the lease they’re amortized (plus rent and tax) into the payment so you’re only paying 4/36ths or something

So in my mind one issue is like the registration and going beyond the 30 days or whatever and the second is BMW/transferability

Paying use tax on a car to drive a few months seems insane so was hoping for a way around it…

It’s unlikely a dealer would issue tags without the registration being in process. I don’t understand exactly what you envision or are asking but car has to be registered.

Then rent/Turo one? Acq and out of state doc fee (if you were paying and not rolling them) alone would more than pay for a rental.

You can also take over a lease from someone at the end of their CA lease where reg is already paid.

Was hoping I could have a car for few months, flip the lease, make enough to pay my costs for driving it, but due to use tax being on selling price of vehicle seems like not going to happen.

CA only taxes the monthly payment.

This is a pretty unrealistic outlook short of a unicorn and even then I am doubting this. Mostly due to the upfront fees whether you “roll” them in or not would most likely take this out. Fees as in dealer fee, acq fee, registration, and so on.

Just find something on Turo / Sixt / any rental place and enjoy a car for 30 days at a time and you’ll come out financially better with far less stress. Find a corp code, on the right credit card, etc…

Just talked to CDTFA who said I would pay use tax based upon selling price of the vehicle regardless of it being a lease, idk.

Idk I have done this a few times just not with the out of state element. Have even shipped from norcal and come out ahead a bit.

BMWFS won’t permit a transfer until the title work has been completed, in some states that may mean just processed at DMV, in other states that means BMWFS must be in possession of the title. Generally, for this reason, it’s hard to transfer less then 3 months (especially with out of state dealers and runner services) and not possible if you don’t register.
