Hey everyone, need some help with a unique situation I have.
I’m currently leasing a 2019 BMW 330i xDrive for about $350 per month. Recently, one of my tires was damaged and needs to be replaced (non run-flats). The problem is that I only have about 3 months left on the lease, so I’m wondering if its worth it to even replace it (especially given I might need to replace all 4 as its AWD). I called up the BMW dealership & they mentioned if the other tires are fine, I would just need to pay for the one tire (about 250$).
These are my options:
Return the lease early, pay 250$ for the one tire + the remaining lease payments ($1050). Any extra charges for returning the lease early?
Replace the tires so that it can be driven for 3 months. The dealership said the car would have to be returned with BMW approved tires which are pretty expensive I’m assuming?
BMW details lease returns on their website - same specifications as oem (size, speed rating). Perhaps buying a moderately priced set makes sense - you should be good. Be glad you don’t have run flats - the selection is limited and pricey.
I’m actually in the same exact situation and I need to replace all four of mine as they are comically bald. In my experience of fighting these bills, BMW will always charge for low tread, and I’ve rarely had success in them taking a charge off for tires. I’ve never heard about the BMW approved thing — but I do plan on buying four gently used tires. They all have to be the same tire and be matching, but they don’t have to be the same exact tire as the car came with. This is just my experience with returning cars in New York and what I plan on doing for myself this month.
You said there is no ‘legally thing called BMW Approved Tires’, where did I say they had to be returned with the lease?
I just showed you there are BMW Approved Tires, and I guess the little Star makes them legal. Versus someone else saying my ‘Non Star’ tires are BMW Approved.
Was in a similar situation. My run-flat tire got a tear 2 weeks before returning it (after asking for a two week extension!)
Anyways, I had it replaced (1 tire) at BMW dealership as they were the only one that had a run-flat tire on a Saturday afternoon, since I was nowhere near home. All other tires were in okay shape. Replaced with same OEM tire and cost me ~$450.
If you can, shop around online, and get the tire shipped to a local shop. But definitely not worth paying for early termination for a single tire.
For context, had a bmw 540i xdrive with 38k miles.
On top of the already mentioned solution of replacing one tire, you should use a gauge and see where you are on the other tires.
With that payment you may want to consider extending the lease an additional 2 months. You’d get more use out of the tire(s) you buy and nothing else in that category will come close to $350 / month currently.
Well shoot, I came to ask about this as I just had a sidewall blowout on tires with 10k miles on them. Tire is still holding pressure but I’m obviously not going to drive on that. With the mileage, would one tire work? 2 1/2 years into the lease and only put 5k miles on the car (previous loaner).
These are run flats as well and go atleast $300 each tire alone.
