My comprehensive deductible is $1000, so if we can go aftermarket, the total would be less than or right around there. I’m fairly certain my insurance would cover OEM, but just curious if I could get away with aftermarket.
The lease contract does state “genuine manufacturer’s parts” so there’s that. But, I’ve seen a couple stories of people saying they’ve been totally fine with turning in a BMW with an aftermarket windshield. I’ve also seen a guy say they dinged him $1400 for it.
So, who knows. Better safe than sorry, most likely.
I think it all comes down to who inspects the car upon return. Some are more lenient than others.
If it’s only $3-400 difference for just the windshield itself, might as well just use the OEM and not have to worry about getting a bill a few months later.
Will the heads up display and wipers work with the aftermarket windshield? If there’s a chance they won’t I would personally just go with the OEM windshield.
Glass coverage is different than the comprehensive coverage. I had similar issue, but had glass coverage and my deductible was $50. I did pay an extra monthly fee for the glass coverage, however.
Bro, don’t call insurance you have high deductible . I am in a similar situation. Does you windshield have spider crack means does it have legs and is it spreading? If yes the you need to repair, if no then you don’t need to repair.
Now If you need to repair, I believe you can get it off-market for $200. If you do not want to repair BMW will charge you $400. Do yourself a favor and schedule a pre-inspection with dealer, the agent with tell you what you need to fix and give you an estimate on what charges you have to pay in case you do not fix them.
@sssick Yeah, I’m thinking I need to just do the safe thing here.
@JamesBond That’s what I’ve been reading. There’s also a windshield that is the exact same thing without a BMW logo, that’s in between the cheap aftermarket and the OEM. That could be an option.
@maine99: Is it safe to drive with it? If not get it changed. Call the dealer and get an estimate for new one. Also call OEM places and craigslist you will be able to find an original matching you specs. If the price difference is not a lot get original. Are leasing a new BMW also? If yes then just get a cheapo and negotiate your new deal that way, they should be pretty lenient.
Check with your insurance on glass coverage. As someone else mentioned earlier, my comprehensive deductible was $1000 as well, but they sent safelite to change a windshield for me and I only had to pay $50. This was with geico FWIW
