BMW lease return: Pre-inspection and unused miles

My aunt’s BMW lease (330xi) is up in about 3 weeks. It was a loaner with ~2k miles on it and was a 2-year lease with 10k/year.

She drove less than 5k miles and the car is in excellent condition.

Can she just take the car to a local BMW dealership to turn it in without having a pre-inspection done? Or do you still recommend getting one done?

Also, how does she make sure that she gets the money back for those unused miles?

Thank you everyone in advance for your time!

  1. Get a preinspection, it’s a 30 min deal and confirms your vehicle is in excellent condition

  2. Appraise the car on carvana, with 7k miles, you may have equity that you can cash in.

Thank you for your reply!

Already tried Carvana and Vroom but no luck.

What money back for unused miles? The measly $300 credit?

We just had ours inspected by autovin, and while my wife was the one home, she said it was pleasant experience and even educational for her.

The customer service with autovin (scheduling, phone convo) is like Chick-fil-A quality!

Yes as Jon said, bmw does a very generous 300 bucks maybe less or maybe a little more for all those unused miles.

I read from other posts that BMW refunds(?) some amount of money for unused miles. Not sure and that is why I am asking.

Is it the $300 regardless of the amount of unused miles?

Thank you!

I’m pretty sure they don’t refund anything, they’ll give you that 300 towards the new lease / purchase, but if you are just turning the car in you’ll get bubkis.

If you are turning the car in and not taking another one the 300 credit can be applied towards the disposition fees.

The $300 credit is same regardless if its a 3 series or 7 series and the amount of unused miles.

Got this car from BMW Ramsey NJ. My aunt lives in Bayside, Queens, NY.

I am being told that I cannot turn it in to BMW Bayside but I have to go to BMW Ramsey because BMW Bayside does not have space…?

Is this usually the way BMW lease turn-in works?

Is your aunt not taking another car at all? You can ground your lease at alternate brand dealership as well if you are taking another lease and that dealer can return the car to the BMW dealer they work with.

In most cases the local BMW dealer should take the car and only at the height of panic during initial lockdown did I hear that they were full and were not accepting the cars sold by other dealers.

You can call few BMW dealers around and let them know that the car is way under mileage and in perfect condition (if it is) for them to think about adding it in their certified inventory and that might open an option for you in your area.

Called two local dealerships again to let them know that the vehicle has only ~5k miles in excellent condition.

Now, both dealerships want the car lolll

With low / reduced inventory for most brands these days is it not worth looking into extending the current lease for a couple of more months?

Obviously how good the original deal was would factor into if you or your aunt would want to extend it.

First part is true but BMW tiers the credit based on the percentage of unused miles. So it can range from $100-$300.

Here I found it;

10% - 14%: $200
15% - 25%: $250
25%+ - $300

I just turned in my BMW yesterday with 3 months remaining on the lease and only 10k miles on it. I still have my $300 from my prior lease. Since I switched to Audi, I will be interested if I get another $300 for the unused miles or if just the original $300 credit was on there. Will let you know when I get my final statement.

So much negative equity in BMW Leases - dealer wanted no part of it (even with 10k miles on a 2018).

Some brands incentivize their leases by artificially inflating the RV.
