BMW Lease Protection / Tire and Wheel Protection - Worth it or not?

,

Hello everyone! I am getting into a new lease for an X3 M40i and I was wondering if I should get the lease end protection, and/or the tire and wheel protection offered from BMWFS? Are either of these worth it or is it a false sense of security from these added “protection” plans? Would appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks a bunch!!

I picked it up through bmw since I have the 22s and the roads aren’t so good. I think it’s a must if you live in areas with not so good roads.

Search the forum, asked and answered a million times.

You didn’t mention how much their charging you but…

I built an X6 with 22inch low profile tires and was very concerned about damages. My payment went from $947 to $1200 after they started trying to sell all the extra bells and whistles.

Here is the quote I got from AAA and can be purchased at anytime, unlike the fact that you have to buy from the dealer at time of signing.

My plan was to buy a 72 month package, cancel if I don’t use it and get a prorated refund for the unused 3 years, since you can buy a package then sell the car and no longer need the coverage. You’ll need to read the cancellation and proration terms.

You also need to know the risks you face driving. Weeks before delivery I studied the streets I drove on but in reality you can’t avoid potholes regardless of how good you think your roads are. DAS doesn’t detect potholes and will drop you right into one.

At 1000 miles I caught a nail in the non-run flats and was able to quickly plug it for $15.

Your payment going from $950 to $1200 feels a bit insane / not realistic. What were they including? Certainly not just a tire and wheel package I would hope?

Thank you for the responses! I appreciate the insight.

How many wheels and how many tires have you replaced at your own expense in the past 10 years, for reasons that would be covered by the plan you are considering?

At least a million, along with

tl:td;

  • price a tire and a rim for your car
  • see what others pay for various w&t
  • do the math what it’s worth to you

To be quite frank, I asked no questions, just told the finance manager that I have no interest. He wasn’t even pushy, just going through the necessary screens. But to your point it wasn’t just the tire and wheel package.

You implied turning the finance manager down so did you mean your payment would have gone from $947 to $1,200?

You need to compare the cost of this package with the cost of replacing and or repairing one (or 2) of your wheels. I will add that 20+ rims are almost always a pain in the ass on city streets. I had 20’s on a custom bmw, and finally gave up and stepped down to 19’s. Rubber is too thin for protection at this point.

Yes correct. I definitely went there knowing I wasn’t buying any add ons. He just had to go through his fancy screen with all the value added services on the menu.

Good reminder that by law, F&I has to present the menu, and ideally the same way to every customer.

As I shared in older post, I price rims and tires for today whatever I’m ready to lease before I go sign, and I look at what wear & tear covers and should cost, to have numbers in mind. Like everything, the price on products are always negotiable, and there are many 3rd party and aftermarket options — so if wheel & tire makes sense, but not at the dealer’s price, you can shop it later.

A lot of great tips in the “don’t be a dummy” thread I shared.

My tires needed replacing before 36,000 miles on my x2.

When I was in the finance office it seemed like a decent deal to not worry at turn in. The price they showed on the screen did not make sense as I figured around $200 a tire to replace. I reached into my wallet and said…I have $500 cash not putting anymore money on the lease. Finance guy took my offer. Figured $125 a tire was a good deal.

I sincerely appreciate each and every one of you for responding!!! I have a lot of great information to go over. Thanks again!!

IMO t&w protection on SUVs is pointless.
Bimmerpost consensus backs this up.

If this was a 750, it would be a different case.

Only you can truly answer this question. Do you take good care of your cars?
I’ve had several cars that have pretty much been scratches and spotless throughout my time of ownership. YMMV but if you take good care of your cars and take some common sense precautions you can probably make a good case for skipping the F&I add ons.

Sidenote- OP from your username, I have a feeling that your risk tolerance is far greater than just a couple of busted rims and or scratches lol. Feel like this should be a no brainer for you.

This was a different case with another broker in Jersey. We negotiated a price, and I went in to just sign the paper work. I was not offered any add on, which I am not upset about. I just did not know Mazda did not include GAP. If offered I would’ve bought it in a heartbeat. I also blame myself for assuming and not asking, hence why I am not upset.

Solution was a minor inconvenience but I need to switch the one car over to Progressive.
