BMW chooses Tesla's Supercharger network for its future EVs - Autoblog

Hoorah! Now i can look at an i4 as a model3 replacement

Isn’t Tesla opening up its network anyway?

But really, there should be a mandatory, universal plug like USB-C. No reason to have CCS, NACS, CHADEMO, etc.

agree w this. if the infrastructure is already put in place, like tesla has done, everyone should have access to it. the correct way to spur ev adoption in the US was to invest in the infrastructure, rather than giving 7500 car purchase rebates.

Well there goes the neighborhood.

It would appear that at this rate the NACS plug will become universal, if not mandatory.

Now EU which has their own type, are they going full NACS. . Or should they call it EUCS?

Universal in the USA, yes. Japan / South Korea is sticking with J1772, while the EU standard is CCS Type 2.

Last holdouts for not using NACS are currently Toyota and VW, right?

If you build it, they will come

I’ve been saying it all along.

What does this mean for those of us with non-NACS cars (e.g. J1772 plug)?

Will there be adapters and the ability to charge in the future at what are likely to be NACS-only sites? Is it just a hardware change or software too?

Adapters and more adapters.

Tesla superchargers are starting to roll out their magic docks with CCS adapters. For Tesla destination chargers, it’ll be an adapter that you’ll more than likely have to provide. Other charging locations (mainly Electrify America sites) will probably stick with providing CCS for as long as they can before swapping over.

I still see the odd chademo charger here and there, so it’s not like every J1772 plug is going to disappear overnight.

More Betamax → VHS adaptors… (which don’t exist)

The adaptors are already out there, the Software is what needs upgrading to support.

Yes, to clarify: I meant universal in North America, not globally.

Context: When Elon started Tesla, he wanted to build a universal standard, however the other auto makers declined. So, he went ahead and built a completely different plug, at the time not compatible with other manufacturers.

There should have always been a standard, similar to a gas pump. It’s about time all are adapting to the NACS plug. EV will never take the lions share of the car market, but an open, accessible network will draw a lager buyer’s audience.

Two small nitpick: 1. Elon didn’t start Tesla. 2. Other auto makers had already gravitated to their standards (mainly j1772) before the NCAS was developed.

If we’re being honest, the Tesla we know today is because of Elon.

Without him, assuming Tesla was even still around they’d still be producing spare parts bin kit cars.
