Actually so much more useful than 3 series. I believe it’s built on 7 series platform. So much room in back seat.
The 5 series GT is on the F01 7 series platform, not the 3 series GT
It is built on the stretched 3 series platform developed for the Chinese market. If you need backseat space it is a fantastic car. More rear seat legroom than the 5 series, X3 or X5.
If you don’t need the rear seat room or cargo space you are better served getting a regular 3 or 4 series.
A niche vehicle but if it fits what you need it can be the perfect BMW. Here’s mine, liked it so much and the deals for a new one were so bad that I bought mine at lease end.

I have 300 or so miles in my new* GT and all I can say is yes it’s a niche car but it’s incredibly versatile, comfortable, and it rips.
