Does anyone have recommendations for a decent bike rack for a 2020 Volvo XC60?
Would need to be for 2 adult bikes and 2 kids bikes (16" and 12"). Looks like the best bet (but super expensive) would be to get the trailer hitch from Volvo ($1300 - don’t think that includes install) and one of the Thule Apex XT (~$500).
From what I can tell it seems roof racks would be a cheaper way to go, but I can’t find any evidence of a way to get the kids’ bikes up there, given the dramatic difference in distance between front/rear wheels compared to the adult bikes.
I got Thule T2 Classic, but had to replace it with Thule T2 Pro, because my wife could not pull it up/down due to somewhat uncomfortable handle. Go with Thule T2 Pro if you have a hitch.
Google Curt hitch #13305 Volvo S90 (2018). I ended up not getting it, but it would have worked and U Haul would install it and match the online price. There is likely one for the XC60. Also try etrailer.com
I have not dealt with this yet on my ‘19 XC60 (all biking has been close to home), but my prior two leases I had a 1 1/2” hitch installed by UHaul for my Thule bike rack. The only issue was it blocked the under-bumper kick sensor, but for under $200 instead of $1300 I would probably go that route again.
I’m 6’ and used roof racks on my WRX and Mazda3 (shorter hatches) but I would not want to try a roof rack on the XC60.
Anyone know if you buy a roof rack load bar if it’s reusable on other cars? One problem with leasing is I don’t like putting money into vehicle accessories I can’t reuse.
When I had Thule and Yakima roof racks, the crossbars are universal (sized) but the clamps that attach then to your roof rails are vehicle specific.
So I use the same crossbars on the WRX and Mazda3 but had to buy a different fit kit when i moved between cars. I had ski and bike attachments and would switch between seasons.
But absolutely nothing makes a new lease look ancient then putting a three-year-old roof rack on it. As much as I loved my Subaru rally pig sticker on the faring…
I was thinking that too. But if it’s going to cost me close to $2k to get a trailer hitch and bike rack… I might just suck it up and go with roof racks.
Feel free to swing by and pick off all my scabs, not just this particular one.
I spent two months trying to find A V60 (not a deal, a car - they were order-only at the time) when I settled for the XC60 (which I honestly really like), but I also spent most of May and June during the Costco programlooking for a V60 Polestar in Black, willing to dig a hole and bury $8k in negative on a car selling for MSRP, and every one sold out from under me.
And two weeks ago when the XC60 had its first service, guess what I had as a loaner?
The V60 is very nice and I prefer car height/ride over SUV, but we gets what we gets sometimes.
His was just taunting me since he can’t ship to California. Another midwest dealer who had one required in-person delivery which ruled that out. But anyone who would ship one or was in driving distances was gone in a flash at MSRP: no A Plan, nada.
I’m in the XC60 for the duration now, and like you could easily fit two bikes in back with the seats down. But IMO the hitch racks are the best way to lug bikes around (skis/snowboards do fine on the roof). And for the cost with no other towing needs I’m team UHaul.
Ah sorry, I forgot about your V60 Polestar quest. I had one in end of June willing to sell first come first serve at MSRP, but it was in black (eww) and I had just leased a V60 MOM.
I love Bursting blue. It’s not too far away from Aqua Blue on my 987 Boxster or Sapphire Blue on the 991/981. I’d totally get it on a V60 (I’d pay extra to find it), I didn’t know it was even an option . Now who’s picking at who’s scabs??
No way should it cost you anything close to 2k. I bought a 2” trailer hitch many years ago and had uhaul install it plus add wiring for lights. All in (hitch, lights, installation, and bike rack) was $650, and I found out I overpaid. A pal got a hitch (including installation) from Uhaul for about $250. I had the wiring put in later after I realized you needed to connect to the brake lights on a uhaul trailer. Live and learn. Btw, this is the bike rack I bought. You may not think you need a 5 bike rack but the extra room makes loading and unloading 4 bikes much easier.
I have tow hitch installed and bought a bike rack from amazon. It couldn’t be more than $500 or $600 total. Not sure where you’re located, but I went to this store to get my tow hitch installed. https://www.racknroad.com/store/index.html
Went with a trailer hitch via UHaul. $266.20 installed. (pending install on 7/27, so, will update if something changes).
Thanks everyone for the comments/recommendations! Going to do a little more research on what makes sense for a bike rack now knowing it will be hitch-mounted on a 2" square tube. Not sure I want to just throw money at a nice one since we aren’t “avid” bikers - just need something to work.
Plenty of places to check, and probably great deals used (and they last). I got most of my Thule/Yakima stuff at REI for 20% off during the annual sale, but it’s 9 months away at this point.
