Best self driving car (besides tesla - if any?)

hey all, I live in LA.
I hate driving. But i especially hate freeway traffic.

I have been waiting to buy car forever, but waiting for something that can drive itself on the freeway at the very least (that would be my goal). still driving my 08 mazda cx9 awd.

I have looked at teslas over the years, but i don’t like the EV part of it (I travel to wilderness areas too often)

is there anything out there that can self drive 100% safely on an interstate?

I should elaborate more. What I mean is can the car drive on the interstate, by itself, without my hands on the wheel at all for extended periods of time, and do it reliably and safely (not a gimmick).

or should I just wait a few more years.

new cadillac ct6? wonder how those lease…

nevermind that car is 70k+ with probably a bad residual

how about the 2017 MB E300?

Volvo Xc90, 60 or S90 or V90

(Disclaimer: I’ve never driven any car that can autopilot, but follow the news rather closely)

Tesla probably has the best autopilot for highway on the market, but it still requires you to seat behind wheel and be ready to takeover any second. There are a few fatal incidents because the driver didn’t intervene soon enough.

For that reason, Google’s Waymo recently announced they are abandoning their efforts to develop autopilot feature and focuses on fully self-driving technologies instead.

So, it’s probably still years to come before such a car is available on the market.

yah i looked at the s90 been searching since i wrote that first post

probably doesnt lease badly either

only problem is hand on the wheel… so not really self driving on interstate.

i got a feeling gonna be 3 or 4 more years before anything exciting happens.

did not realize mercedes was doing this.

says they are going to greatly expand it soon

Yup, they’ve been implementing it for a while now, slowly and surely it’ll all get there.

Comma.ai

Autopilot for your Honda (or Acura) from the guy who first hacked iphone,PS 3 (as a teen)
Comma.ai tried to sell ($1000 plus $30/mo) units but was threatened by NTHSA last Nov.
so it has become FREE opensource since then.

you may want to check out his videos

still maturing product though…

The only one in the near future is the Cadillac CT6 with “super cruise”. They have mapped out all the highways via satellite, so it replicates a Tesla but only on the highway.

yah i found that ct6 but its expensive car. $70k. and i got a feeling it will not lease well, someone correct me if i am wrong.

i think cadillac dont have great RV

After using pilot-assist for a while, I would say it’s pretty decent for interstate. You only have to gently touch the wheel. And there are are certain situations such as work-zones that will need your intervention. I’d say use it for easier cruising and in heavy-traffic, but don’t trust it completely.

That comma ai is scary.

For example I roll through 100 percent of 4 way stops usually at a decent speed. Unless there is obviously another car there.

So imagine it learning from me.

For now adaptive cruise control and lane assist is pretty helpful , (which both accord and Camry have standard now) I would start with those until a more full Auto Pilot/ self driving car is released.

The only response to this post is no, there is no car with this feature that is in a mature state and 100% safe. The only cars you will even find early stages of this capability are going to be high end so if $70k scares you away then keep waiting. The Model 3 is not something to bank on any time soon either

don’t even get me started on Tesla. I could write 20 paragraphs of what I think, but i will summarize it with one word, “unimpressed”.

I will go back into slumber on this issue, i think this is gonna take another 2 years minimum for any real substantial progress, maybe another 5 years.

Audi A8 is the first supposed level 3 autonomous car. If you want access to the latest developing technology, you have to pay a premium, (if you didnt preorder, the tesla model 3, it is an 18 mo wait i was told).

Exactly - it will learn from you and then give you a dose of your own medicine. It will go through all stop signs at 100 mph and that should correct your behavior
