At the dealership, debating MB car seats practicality (synthetic leather vs AMG line “alcantara”)

Hey all, need to make a decision I have no clue about, I’m looking at 2 GLAs on the lot, one with the AMG line alcantara, the other one is the base leather seat.

Are these AMG line bad? Do they get stained easily? Hard to clean? Should I pick one over the other? Should I stay way from these amg line seats or are they good quality? Price diff is negligible, all else is equal.

Appreciate your help!

Is the base real leather? Many MB and BMW cars come with synthetic leather.

I had a Toyota with Ultrasuede seats, which I believe is similar to alcantara. I liked the Ultrasuede, and it showed almost no wear after 11 years. It was black, so I did not have to worry about them showing dirt.

Sorry typing from the dealership, it’s the base synthetic leather ones. The suede ones are black as well.

I have the base “Black MB-Tex” in the GLS and base “Space Grey” in the EQS.

My kids beat these seats up all the time… spilling stuff, dropping candy, stepping on the seats to climb into their safety seats, etc. Each time stuff just wipes off.

Even when I remove the car seat to clean under them, there is no indentation or staining. The seats in our Tesla Model 3 / X were all screwed up (stained and dented) after like 2 months with the same kids (although they were younger back then) and the same car seats.

So yeah, I think if you’re worried about normal use, these seats should old up fine.

So by MB-Tex, you mean the synthetic leather not the suede/alcantara, right?

The AMG line will hold you in better and I think they look and feel better too.

Correct, the base-seats are synthetic.

So they’re well built?

The suede seats and steering wheels are an absolute nightmare. There is more surface area due to the fibers which attract grime and dirt. Steering wheels in particular get nasty fast unless you are ultra diligent.

I like that style better, and they usually go for a premium. For all out durability though, I would probably pick the MB-TEX.

The steering wheel is leather, the seats are MB-tex but the inner is that microfiber material, adding a photo:

Personally, I’d avoid it, but if you like it thats what matters.

Out of curiosity, did you have bad experience with in the past?

Id go for it. Love my alcantara steering wheel. Pretty easy to clean too. Makes the car feel more special

That said MBTex (fake leather) is very durable, so if you have kids it would be the smarter choice. They do stain easier.

I love the look but would not choose due to :service_dog:

I have the MB-Tex/Alcantara interior (and steering wheel) in my GLC and I love it. Really no issues with wear and tear, but admittingly I don’t beat it up. No kids, just girlfriend and small dog. In the summer I’m in and out of it often with damp towels and bathing suits and it holds up just fine.

Almost anything would be better than full MBtex

Alcantara looks better but MB tex is easier to clean & maintain.

I guess it’s not an issue in the GLA because it doesn’t have it anyway but i seems on MB and BMW you can’t get ventilated seats with alcantera. I don’t mind it otherwise but that would be kind of irritating.

Thanks all for your great tips and help! I decided to go with the Alcanatra. The whole AMG line package just looked nicer and had the better value as well.

Appreciate all the insights!
