As used car prices continue to soar let's reflect on the Great Positive Equity Wave of 2020. How did you do?

I guess that explains how they might be able to justify overpaying for inventory relative to their competitors?

Definitely. I’m sure a majority of their profit comes from financing.

I’ll add mine, this is my first time leasing so I was selling my own cars instead. Both cars were showing their age and we really only need one car now.

Sell Date: Sept 2020
2013 BMW X3, MSRP $49,325
Purchase Price Dec 2015 @ 41k miles: $27,200
Tax/Repairs/Upgrades Costs over 4.75 yrs: $6200
Carvana offer @ 96k miles: $8,400
Effective monthly cost of owning vehicle: $441
Replaced with : 2020 Toyota Tundra 4x4 SR5 Crewcab TRD Off Road, MSRP $51,200
Lease Summary: $415, 1st payment DAS, 36/12 (Texas)

Sell Date: Sept 2020
2008 Ford F150 XL Long Bed, MSRP Unknown
Purchase Price Oct 2016 @ 78k miles: $10,500
Tax/Repairs/Upgrades Costs over 4 yrs: $2000
Carvana offer @ 87k miles: $5,700
Effective monthly cost of owning vehicle: $142
Replaced with : Nothing yet

Both of the Carvana offers were higher than offers we received at the beginning of the year with less miles. I saw others in TX got into the $300s on the same Tundra lease a few months ago but there seemed to be a real lack of inventory when we looked and we were happy to find one that fit our criteria.

another data point fwiw.
after reading this thread, i was curious and checked on my 2018 330 x-drive due end of this year, and received the highly generous offers below(kind of expected this anyway, though not this much of a delta between payoff and offers):

original msrp: 52,300
bmwfs payoff: 32,500
carvana: 24,400
vroom: 24,600
algo: 23,000
rodo: can we go on a date first?

looks like i’ll be keeping the bimmer for a while longer before i sadly part ways next year, and keep the pics for future drunken nights

I’ve been noticing carvana offers have plummeted for a lot of different cars I’ve checked. Honda, Nissan, Toyota, etc. I wonder if they have too much inventory? I see the car I sold them in mid august is still for sale, price hasn’t changed either.

I just sold a Fiat Spider to Carvana for more than I paid for it new.

Selling my 2018 Durango SRT with an MSRP of $70500 and a buyout of $42k (5 payments left but 6k under mileage) to a local BMW dealer for $46500 and basically rolling that equity into paying all the taxes and fees upfront on a new 2021 X5 with an MSRP of $76k (got it for 9% off) with the same payment of $850 a month on a 36/12 lease. The dealer is also letting me keep the Durango until my BMW shows up with no penalty for adding miles, just have to avoid crashing it :grimacing:

They’re a publicly traded tech company. Zero profit but growing sales is the lunatic solution to a soaring stock price!

I recently leased Q50 Sport and checked pay off quote it’s high $365xx. Currently my Q50 has like 400 miles.

Out of curiosity I went to vroom put in 5k miles and got a quote of $37,500 for my Q50. Checked KBB it was almost spot on. With private offer lower end estimate of upto 41k.

I was very surprised knowing how bad Infiniti’s are going for. I hope it stays like that for a while

Sell Date: October 2020
2018 Dodge Durango R/T, MSRP $50,200
Lease summary: $500/$2700 DAS, 36/12
Payments remaining: 5 months
Payoff: 29,600
Carvana offer: 31,660
Vroom: 31,200
ALGo: 28,000
Positive equity: $2,060

Replacement: pending

EDIT: right before accepting Carvana’s offer, found Rodo and got an offer of $32,000.

Sold 2013 Audi A7 Prestige with 114,500 miles for $15,300, higher than autonation, carvana, shift, but $900 less than vroom to Bidlane.

See it is now listed for $20,900

Just sold (10-09-2020) our 2018 Jeep GC High Altitude package to CarSense for $32,150.
Had $1,775 equity and we’ll be seeing this check when the title clears!

Original Lease info on the GC
$0 down
12K miles/ 39 months / Lease termination date: February 6
Lease payment $494 pre-tax $540 w/PA 9% tax

AutoLenders GO was the second highest offer @ $32,000
VRROOM gave a nice offer @ $31,945

Was not expecting to have any equity in this Jeep but we’re very happy to have enjoyed a brand new Jeep for almost 3 years and now GARI Leasing (look him up on LH) just set us up with an X3 lease!

Happy Hacking!

2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L. 11 payments in / $419 month with 0 down / 36/15

$380 positive equity after selling to ALGo. Would have been underwater with everyone else.

Replaced with $200/month Bolt. One of my stipulations to grab Bolt deal was to not lose money on current lease. Turns out old lease paid for almost two new lease payments …

note: if you have a maxima lease return, you have equity. you’re welcome.

Two vastly different cars, what made you switch STR → BMW? I’m contemplating a switch in the other direction.

Hey,

There was no one reason I switched, I’m 43 with two little kids so it wasn’t like I was really using the SRT to it’s potential 99% of the time beyond that the fit & finish, tech, etc in the X5 is way beyond what the Durango was offering, also I like new types of cars and new brands almost every time I lease so I thought I’d give BMW a try. The 21’ Durango and 18’ I was coming out of had pretty much no exterior changes and the interior only gained a bigger infortainment screen so it would have felt like leasing the same car for 6 years. I will say the Durango gave me literally no problems the 2.5 yrs I had it and the engine noise and acceleration were a blast, go for it if that’s what your in the market for it was a fun vehicle.

Yeah, I think it would be a difficult switch from the SRT V8 to the X5, for me anyway. As you had mentioned, I’m sure the sound and power were awesome for an SUV (especially at that price point). On the other hand, I’ve always toyed with the idea of getting an X5 but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. A bit different, but I think I would go the Cayenne route first. Awesome machines.

Valid points. I’m coming out of my third 5er M Sport, but need three rows now. Wanted something fun, loud and fast, but that interior is definitely going to take getting used to coming from 5 series.

oh boy, you had to bring this up…
