Anyone recommend wheel and tire protection/warranty on a leased car?

Especially when some of these cars come with 19" wheels along with low profile, run flat tires, I have seen a rash of posts about their wheels bending or cracking. A lot of these dealer add ons seem like snake oil but the wheel and tire warranty seems to make sense as long as it doesn’t have any hidden exclusions. What do you think, should I spring for this?

Depends on the cost but not the worst idea, I have gotten 3 new tires for my wife’s suv from insurance. I am also paying aroung $900 for one of my leases in total given each wheel costs around $1000 for that car. It is the only dealer extra warranty that is usually worth the $$ for the piece of mind.

If you live in an area prone to potholes or your driving/parking habits lend itself to damaging expensive OEM wheels, then it could be worthwhile. As with just about everything with car buying, the cost is negotiable.

I was thinking if it was around $500 I would go for it especially because of some of the cars I was looking at. I also live in NJ… roads are terrible in some parts

Are these normally manufacturer or third party warranties? I don’t want to get one and have it not pay a claim lol

I got tire/rim coverage having read my cars run flats are notorious for blowing and the rims cost like $600 to replace. My wife already scraped a rim which was repaired at no cost and given we are 3 months into the term, it gives me peace of mind…

Both exist depends on what your dealership offers.

I ALWAYS get it on my low profile vehicles, not on SUV with large tires. Its almost always paid off unfortunately (NYC).

FYI, Tire Rack includes insurance on most if not all of their tires. I’ve already blown two tires on my ATS-V off one giant pothole, so less than a year in and I already paid off the insurance.

On my Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, even though its 20inch rims, has alot of rubber to protect from impact…Would almost be a waste.

Ask the Finance Manager to show you cost. Offer $100 to $200 over cost. Deny at first, then come back to it once the seal is done. I for the wear and tear plan on a Lexus RX350. Paid $600. Covers $7500 of damages for the lease return.

I purchased it for my Tacoma after having it on my previous vehicle. With my previous vehicle, I used it for two tows and two tires so it well covered the cost. With my Tacoma, I went into the financing office with the payment before all the extras (Think it was $474). Initially, the extra tire hazard with the payment was $490. To limit negotiations, I said my absolute maximum was $480, and they got me to $480.40. So for a total of ~250, I have full tire and rim care. Well worth it.

if I can get it around $500 or less I will probably do it for peace of mind. Especially with the run flats providing a harsh ride

I recently just leased a Honda HR-V and I got the tire/wheel protection and dent repair. It’s the wife’s car and our first lease, so she insisted it was necessary. The cost was included with the monthly payments. It has been less than 30 days, can I pay the cost now and remove it from the payments?

Your payment will stay the same, you will just be paying off the balance of the lease early.

Yea, upon further research the monthly payment amount can not be changed. Oh well, at least now I know for my future lease.

I replaced all 4 of my low profile run flats in the last two years with insurance. I have one burst and the others developed bubbles. Also had the rims polished twice in the two years.

Always had the coverage for my wife X5 leases but used it once in ~6 years. But never had a hassle with rim damage when turning it in.

how much did you pay and did you get from the dealer or private?

Well, this was 6 years ago when I posted that, so pricing has surely gone up but from my most recent experience with a BMW lease, I think it was $1k or so in that example? Dealers sell the insurance packages, but they are facilitated by 3rd party companies. I’m not sure if you can buy a protection package on a new car once you have driven it off of the lot.
