Any luck selling Infiniti lease to CarMax or 3rd party?

They called IFS right in front of us, got the number and we inked the deal.

The impetus to the question above was really more of why did IFS give them the number? since IFS no longer allows 3rd party buys outs. The answer that I was posting was because the Auffenburg group is also a Nissan dealer, they aren’t a 3rd party dealer.

A little context goes a long way around here!

Ok so they didn’t ‘obtain the 10 day’ they bought it as a Nissan / INFINITI dealer.
Ok that makes lots of sense.

Well, they probably had a 10 day payoff quote, it just was the 1st party value.

Since this is CA, I would think of the 10 day no tax clause instead of a 10 day payoff quote.

Those are two totally unrelated things. A 10 day payoff is essentially what you always get when requesting a lease or loan pay off.

There’s also no applicable tax here as a dealer is buying the lease out.

The original Assumption. Per his ‘10 day rule’ statement.

  1. Was not an Infiniti Dealer was a Mazda dealer.
  2. You cannot sell to a Mazda dealer directly.
  3. Was in CA, which has a 10 day rule on Taxes.

So my answer was ‘how did you do that’
Afterwards you clarified that dealership (Mazda) had a Nissan/Infiniti in their umbrella which cleared things up and the 10 day rule was meaningless

OP here. Believe it or not, I was actually successful in selling to Carmax. It was a long and very arduous process with a bit of luck. Basically i had to call in multiple times, and kept getting the same answer over and over about IFS not selling to 3rd party.

One caveat is that I did obtain a Carmax quote way back in February. I argued that my intentions were clear, albeit 3 months earlier, about selling the car. I was able to convince one of the phone guys that I should be grandfathered in and he put some verbiage to that respect on my account.

I went into Carmax and they too refused to handle the case knowing IFS policy. I had to do a lot of convincing there too and get on a 3 way call with IFS. Then IFS again starts denying it, and I told them to look at the notes. This is where some luck came in and the phone tech got a bit confused and gave out the dealer payoff quote. He was definitely the “new guy” at work. But in any event, it worked in my favor and Carmax had the quote they needed. They cut me a $2300 check on the spot.

But of course it didn’t end there either. I had to sweat it out for several weeks until IFS applied my payment. Then, when they did apply the payment, it kept showing the monthly lease payments due on my account. So I had to call in several times about that and get it escalated.

I was able to FINALLY get in touch with a very knowledgeable higher up at IFS who helped me through the whole thing. I emailed her a copy of the Carmax paperwork and odomoter statement. I also had to send in a letter by email authorizing IFS to apply my MSD to the payoff to make things whole. I did that and she instantly credited my account of the false lease payments and closed out the account all on the same day.

So basically, it was a crazy and long process. There was definitely some luck involved and me getting a quote back in Feb may have helped a little. But really, I think I just got lucky that Carmax happened to phone in and the new, confused guy gave out the quote.

I will never, ever return to IFS after this. It’s one thing to change a policy, but it’s BS to do so for people already on contracts. And yes, I know what the contract legally states about who can buy the car, but it’s never been enforced that way.

You are aware that almost all of the OEM’s have applied this policy right? Even BMW is giving out vibes that they are leaning this way.

That’s fine. It wasn’t just about this policy. I’ve had plenty of other issues with them too like not being able to transfer my lease without a release of liability. I had no issues transferring a Toyota though.

Either way, I have an order in for a Tesla and I own my other 2 cars, so I won’t be leasing again any time soon anyway.
