Advice needed. At what point do I contact corporate?

Long time hackr, have negotiated my last 3 leases no problem, but this past experience has been downright disrespectful. It’s a long one, so buckle up.

Back in late August I negotiated a deal for a 2025 Honda Prologue, my fiancee was looking to get into a newer car and this would let us take advantage of the EV credit. After a few months research, and comparing quotes from different dealers around Florida, I called up one down south (Dealer 1) and asked if they would match a publicly advertised lease deal from another dealer (Dealer 2) that didn’t have the color combo we wanted. 24 months, 10k miles, $340/month, 0 DAS (made sure to read the fine print + screenshot and bookmark the page, important later).

After describing the deal, linking the sales associate to the ad itself, and asking them if they would be willing to match it, sales associate “B” tells me there’s no problem matching that.

I’m guessing you can tell where this is going.

Arrive at dealership at 12:30 PM, ask to speak with B, front desk says sure thing they’ll grab them. 30 mins later B approaches us saying “happy you guys could make it” “do you want any water?” etc. Directs us to her desk, asks us “Which car were you guys looking at again?”.

Tell her the Prologue, and remind her of the deal we talked about on the phone not 24 hours ago. She says okay and that she’s going to go check on the specific one I pointed over the phone. Comes back 30 mins later to tell me that unfortunately all the ones on the lot are now pre-sold but that they we’re willing to work on the price because of the inconvenience and that they we’re even willing to have one of the porters drive it us once it arrived on the lot.

Alright, whatever. I’m annoyed but I can’t press them too hard since I didn’t put a deposit down and it seemed like they were aggressively trying to move these, maybe someone else beat me to the deal.

1 hour later, B comes back to her desk with Manager 1. M1 is polite, apologizes for inconvenience but now we can make a deal that we’re both happy with. Look down at the paper and see $615 for 24 months and around 2K down. I stop him mid pitch and say hey look this is nothing liked what I was told and completely off from matching the advertised deal from Dealer 2 I originally showed them. M1 looks like he has no idea what I’m talking about, so I open my laptop and literally navigate to the dealers page and show them the ad that’s still up.

“Let me see what I can do”

1 hour later, a new manager, M2, sits down and apologizes immediately, saying how he knows this must be frustrating. Hands me the new offer sheet: $380/month 2K down. Starts explaining how they’re excited to make up for the frustration, and I stop him mid sentence:

“I’m going to stop you right there, you honestly can’t be serious.” Tell him this is still far off from what B told me they’d be willing to do, and that it’s infuriating that I’ve been here for hours waiting, after driving 4+ hours to get there, and they’re still trying to play hardball on a deal one of the associates get ahead of themselves on.

“Okay okay let’s see what we can do make this right.” M2 leaves for another hour. At this point, I’m pretty much livid at the experience and google search the GM’s contact email, end up sending him an email with what was going on. Shortly after, M2 comes back and tells me he’s excited to tell me he can match that originally deal.

Long story short, I tell him I’m not leaving here with a new car either way, why should I do this deal with you after this experience and not literally any other Honda dealership in Florida? After a little while, They end up settling at $325/month 0 down. We end up leaving at 6 PM, finally that’s over.

The car arrives 2 weeks later, the porter drives it up to us, and he assures us the portable charger we selected as one of the charging packages is on the way and will arrive soon. Spoilers, today is Oct 15th and we still have no portable charger.

Called the dealership 6+ times over the course of 3 weeks, no answer from any of the sales associates. Call the dealership to speak with a manager, no answer once I get transferred. Messaged the GM again, doesn’t get back to me this time.

And that brings us to today. Still no info on the portable charger, and overall I’m still just in shock at how awful this dealer was to work with. At this point I want nothing to do with them and just want the charger that’s included with the lease so my fiancee doesn’t have to keep burning money at a superchager.

Is this the point where I contact Honda corporate and just fill them in on all this shenanigans? I just want this charger and to never deal with this dealer again.

TLDR: Dealer tried to bait and switch us on a deal we traveled 4+ hours for only to go around in circles for hours between 4 different employees, and now they’re refusing to reply to any questions about when I’m getting the Honda EV charger I selected as part of the lease deal.

It’s part of the game. This is what makes “deals” possible. But to answer the question, contact the corporate now, but keep in mind they have very limited ways of influencing the dealer.

As part of the paperwork, a “we-owe” should be included outlining what was owed post-sale. Do you happen to have a copy of that?

Did the dealer setup the rest of that charging option, ie $300 free EVgo credit, for you yet?

I selected the $750 credit and saw the credits in the app the next day. Just curious if maybe the charger does get sent to you in the mail and isn’t handled by the dealer.

You’re entirely within your right but 1) Honda doesn’t care 2) you already voted with your wallet and gave them the business after all that horseshit so :man_shrugging:t2:

Exactly. What’s on the paperwork you signed?

Is she at least enjoying her hard-won Prologue?

Never ever negotiate inside of a dealership. The only reason to go to a dealership is to test drive, sign docs, and get the keys. You have allowed the dealer to control the deal… bad idea. Next time, do your research an create a one-page lease proposal and email it to a sales manager or a decision maker… not some floor salesperson who hasn’t a clue. All negotiating should be done via email/phone. You may find the following helpful…

No charger, no deal! You should not have had to wait for a charger. That’s horse shit. This all should have been taken care of before you went to the dealership.

Of course they’re not going to respond. What did you expect from scum bags? They got theirs… they made the deal and so there is no incentive for them to respond. Just give them a very bad review and contact corporate via phone and a follow up letter. Provide names, dates, sequential transaction summaries.

Good luck!

Sounds like typical South Florida dealership games!

It is a terrible system. I have leased two ZDXs and the selected charging option/credits was not listed as an IOU on either of the lease agreements I signed. The dealership has to select the option to get you the right package. If the dealer messes up or doesn’t care, you are probably out of luck.

I can’t begin to explain how ******** terrible Honda corporate is. For my first ZDX the dealership selected the wrong charging package (I wanted $750 EV go credits and they gave me $300+ portable charger). I contacted Honda corporate and asked them change it, they said no problem. Corporate then dithered for 8 weeks, taking at least a week to return any calls, before deciding now the 30 day period to select a new charging package had passed and it was too late. What? I contacted you timely, you did nothing and then say it was too late. That isn’t how this works. It was complete BS but I did not fight them because by that time I needed a new portable charger with my Volvo+ its charger going back, I value the EV go credits at about 25 cents on the dollar and North American Honda’s customer service operation appears to be run by someone who got their start working at Lada in the 1980s.

Then the same ZDX was in the shop for 50 days. I sent the required certified letter so I dotted my Is and crossed my Ts to be lemon law eligible. My salesman told me they are not lemoning these cars but offering people cash compensation. And now they are just refusing to talk to me and every week send me a letter saying they are still reviewing my case. I would have accepted 5K a month ago but now at some point I will have a lawyer deal with them it and it will probably cost them 10x that amount.

You spent an hour recalling all the details then writing and posting this to ask complete internet strangers if you should call corporate after you were treated like dog shit at a dealership who still owes you a charger? That call would of taken you 15 min to make. I’ll never understand some folks.

Yep. Honestly, this guy did everything wrong and called himself a ‘hackr’. This is a lesson on what not to do!

Try to make you feel better. A nissan dealer did the samething even i emphasized i want exactly the numbers i mentioned with zero due at drive off and they still said came here and we can make it happen but don’t want to put anything in email. The worse thing is that first the they asked to copy my driver license when i arrived the shop and explained thats their workflow. And finally mangers came out with bad attitude saying that there will be a few thousands downpay to achieve the numbers we discussed in the phone. And then refuzed any negotiation and bring everyone outside the shop and leave myself in the office.
That’s a shop about 30 minutes drive so it wasted me about 2 hour in total. Of couste give them bad review in google and send a complain email to nissan. But it seems didn’t hurt them too much. They have 3.5+ socre in google for years but still in business now. Guess that’s how some dealerships make money. Basically bait and switch and hope to earn thousands more in every customer

And that’s when you should have walked away. If the dealer isn’t transparent or is uncooperative or showing signs of incompetence, WALK AWAY AND MOVE ON!

But you did leave with a car, correct? So it worked. They showed up to work that day, got paid, and made a sale. You spent your free day there and still gave them business. What is their incentive to change their behavior? You prioritized vehicle color over customer service and got exactly what that gets you - the color you want and crappy service.

This reminds me how I contacted Honda corporate many moons ago about crap service I had received at one of the Honda service stations. I don’t remember the details of the response, at this point, but I do recall being really, REALLY unimpressed by the response (esp given the sterling reputation that Honda cars have).

I’ll likely replace my VW in the next 1–2 yrs, and I’ve been resisting the idea of getting any Honda product, despite the fact that at least one would work very well for my use case. And I keep feeling that there was some other reason I didn’t want another Honda, other than the fact that, after first few yrs, I thoroughly hated my Accord.

Thanks for the reminder….
