3rd party tire road hazard warranty

Has anyone used a tire road hazard warranty from a tire store on a new vehicle? I have heard that some companies will offer the same road hazard warranty you can get when you buy new tires on pre-existing tires if you go in. Normally, I wouldn’t consider something like this, but I’m in the process of having a house built in a neighborhood with lots of construction going on and some of the contractors aren’t particularly good at not leaving nails all over the road. I don’t want to pay for years of coverage so wouldn’t consider the coverage as part of the lease, but exploring aftermarket options.

I’ve seen people mention America’s Tire. Also Mavis may be worth a call if they’re in your neck of the woods.

America’s Tire is who I had in mind (and what spurred this post, since I had an email from them in my spam box).

I’ll have to swing by and take a look. A lot of people in the neighborhood have been reporting constant flats. I haven’t had any issues in my other cars, but the tires are a bit beefier and that could just be survivor’s bias.

Discount/America’s Tire will charge $16 to $20 per tire for road hazard if your tires are new. Discount will only cover the tire cost. You still have to pay for mounting/tire disposal fees/taxes, even if you buy their road hazard plan.

Better off getting Good Sam 's roadside platinum complete auto for $90 for the first year which includes roadside/road hazard and coverage for all vehicles in your household + rental cars. You get a flat - file a claim, but they also only cover the cost of the tire.

TireRack included it with my tires. Just had them installed at a firestone place

That’s a good option for people getting new tires and saving the originals for lease return.

Although one could use the originals until 4/32 before retiring them, no pun intended.

America’s tire will ‘insure’ a new tire on a car they didn’t sell you.
I forgot how many miles you have to have before they ‘wont’

I’ve lived in a neighborhood that was under construction and took my share of nails.

With that said, I’ve never had a nail cause damage that couldn’t be patched.

I’ve never purchased road hazard coverage, but what does it cost per tire and how many times would you have to patch each tire before you’re money ahead?

I’ve picked up a handful of nails over the years and about half of them were patchable and the other half weren’t, but those were generally in lower profile tires. What I have been seeing has been a lot of people in the neighborhood having to get tire replacements due to the nails that are being picked up (which seem to be abnormally large nails used for making the concrete forms). Now, that could be due to the lack of understanding that patching is an option, them having low profile tires that are more susceptible, or could be a legitimate by product of the nails that are getting picked up.

At $15-20 per tire that’s been mentioned, we’re talking about $60-80 total cost. If one tire can’t be patched, it pays for itself. Most places seem to patch for ~$20-30 from what I’ve seen, so 3 patches or so. I’ve been hearing about some people picking up a couple a week when the contractors are being particularly lazy. At the same time, I’m yet to have an issue, so it may be a contractor working in a specific area in the neighborhood that’s causing a localized problem.

Patches are free at Discount Tire/America’s Tire. Nail has to be in the middle of the tread and not sidewall.
