2021 QX50 Owners - Question about the transmission

Just leased a 2021 Luxe AWD and I really like it. $475/month isn’t awful in today’s market either. That being said I have a question that’s been bothering me for other owners.

Is this transmission 7 or 8 speed?! I know when I paddle shift it goes up to 8 gears but even running 75-78 on the highway it stays in 7. Or when I paddle and then it kicks back into auto it drops it back to 7 immediately. Why is this?! Is it a quirk in the new motor/transmission set up? Am I overthinking? Or is it simply just I need to be doing 85+ for eighth to stay locked in.

According to Infinity’s website, this car has a CVT.

The shift points you see are probably fake just to make people think it’s a regular transmission. So the answer to your question is that your car has no gears at all.

a qx50 has a 1 speed CVT.

Yep, CVT, so it “simulates” the gears. The CVT will stay in whatever ratio is the most efficient.

CVT. (2-spd with OD)

No gears in the traditional sense.

Simulated. But eventually optimized for fuel efficiency not power
