2020? Mazda MX-30

Did y’all know that Mazda introduced its first EV? It’s a crossover, it has the weird suicide doors from the RX-8, it uses cork as an interior trim item, and it’s already available for pre-sale in Europe. And, yes, it’s got screens everywhere, too.

Just found out about these today and it looks like they’re being sold in CA in the Fall. I’m going to try and contact dealers to see if I can get a headstart on numbers.

Man, what an embarrassing offering given the current EV market. What’s the point?

Has to be closer to Leaf pricing even for it to be remotely comparable.

But with today’s battery technology, can’t offer 100 mile range.

Compliance vehicle im guessing and only offered in CA

Pathetic range and fast-charging speed, not a ton of utility, and apparently very slow (0-60 in ~9 sec).

This might be attractive at $150/mo as a strictly city commuter EV. Mazda is going to have sweeten those incentives dramatically to move these.

Even that will be a stretch. Like 100-mile range is just pathetic…

Will this sell enough units or earn enough credits to meet CA’s rules?

Addendum: I had totally forgotten that I had created this post until my last post went through, and I saw the OP label! Heh.

Well for 2022 model year, Mazda will have to make it so that 14.5% of their sales are Zero-Emission cars. Thinking Mazda has been getting by from buying credits so far, so they don’t have a “minimum” per se. Friend of a friend speculates there’s ~560 pure EV units coming to CA right now.

All the reviews and other comments I’ve read have been really negative toward the range and the price, so I’m hoping dealers get the hint and try to get rid of these as quickly as possible. Thereby, getting us a pretty good lease deal, since those are still technically “sales” as far as EV crediting goes. I’m hoping it will end up like that Honda Fit EV program a few years back where they offered $199/month Fit EVs + insurance. It was a great deal at the time as far as I could tell.
