2019 BMW i3 w/ tech package – $287 mo lease or buy for $28,000?

,

2019, BMW, i3 BEV, Giga:

I put my deposit down on new build 2019 i3 BEV Giga w/ tech package, heat pump, harmon kardon. I’m posting to keep data fresh on here and I’m looking for feedback if I should lease or buy. What would ya’ll do, a $287 mo/ lease or buy for $28,000 out the door.

3 year old i3 BEVs are going for $18-21k (being fair). So I’m out ~$10k unless these things depreciate even more. I would probably want to keep the car longer than 3 years but not that committed.

If that USAA $10k is legit, you need to buy that thing and sell it in 3 years. Makes no sense to lease it when you can drive it for free for 3 years.

I’ll bet those post sale rebates only require you to keep the vehicle for a year, so I’d buy it and sell it in 12 months for a profit.

@dukez It’s legit. I may lose the OL Code (Spring Driving Event) if I don’t close end of May. Great point that getting into a lease locks me in for 3 years, where I can sell the car before that if I buy with minimal loss or a profit.

Yep. Use that equity for something else in 1-3 years but close on it ASAP. You’ll get tired of the i3 after a year anyway

ha ok glad I posted. Looks like I’m gonna buy it. It’s being built, production week in early April. Will close it ASAP when I take delivery. Will post back when I close.

Owner’s choice is probably better? You’d get $10k in lease incentives and can still get $10k in post sale rebates.

@andyecon Owner’s choice should work on the i3 too right?

I would second that, though I know nothing about it

hmm, there’s some weird disclaimer language on the USAA deal that I can’t go through BMWFS. I’m trying to see if that’s true. I wonder if that will eliminate the owner’s choice option.

Owners choice would use the leasing incentives, not the USAA purchase incentive.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t do an owner’s choice, but would need to do it quickly because TCEQ is down to 70 remaining!

Dang. 70 left !?! may be out of luck on that then. Can’t title and register a car being built in Germany. I’ll ping dealer see if we can do anything preemptively. doubtful.

Thanks everyone for the info so far!

You can get it with an order, check the app!

How set are you in a new build? There are new ones in Austin and Round Rock that you could buy tomorrow and get your application in right away!

Thanks! Says reservation deadline is Feb 28, 2019 But I’m going to have them try anyway. I just wanted a 2019 BEV Giga with tech package. I’ve only put the $1k deposit down so far. Are there 2019s with tech package?

EDIT: I wasn’t set on a new build, just 2019 BEV (no rex) with tech package, and preferably giga.

2019 has the new 42.2 kWh battery with decent range. So I took 2018s off the list. Tech package is a must for the active cruise control features.

I don’t know much about i3’s, but here is one 2019 with tech at least.

Gotcha, thanks for looking for me. I’ll see what dealer and TCEQ says tomorrow. I can go in person to TCEQ and drop off the forms  . and will be knocking for that rebate.

i3 deets.
Rex (range extender) is $4k extra retail
Tera (full leather) is another $800 retail
if they honored 8% off I’d still be paying $4200 more.

That’s a horrible sell price.

They essentially just put MSRP for the most part, would have to negotiate them down of course.

@Wonks20 which one? my original post or the BMW of Austin link? I did my best and took what I thought was a decent deal, wouldn’t have said yes otherwise.
