2018 Tiguan SE vs. 2018 Highlander XLE - which is better deal?

Hi,

I am trying to find a good lease in Ohio. The two cars I am looking at are the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE and 2018 Toyota Highlander XLE.

Can I please get some feedback on the two best lease options I have been presented? I am leaning towards the Tiguan since it is less expensive, but do you think I can get a better deal? If so, how? This is my first time leasing a car and I am so thankful for this site.

Make, model and trim: 2018 Tiguan SE 4motion with 3rd row
Annual mileage: 12,000
Money down: $2,000
Monthly payment: $315

Make, model and trim: 2018 Highlander XLE AWD
Annual mileage: 12,000
Money down: $2,000
Monthly payment: $365

Thank you for your help!!!

Need more information including msrp, selling price, MF…

Also, don’t put any money down. 2000$ can be set aside and used for subsequent monthly payments. The reason being, if the car gets totaled, you won’t get your down payment back. The experts here suggest no money down. Also, check with @Benedetto @nyclife for any lease deals they run. They are reputed brokers you can rely on this forum. Also, you can check with @Jrouleau426 for what he can get you.

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. The Tiguan SEL would compare better to the XLE. The SE does not have power liftgate which might be a problem for weaker people. The Highlander also has adequate power. The Tiguan (all trims) is a bit underpowered.

Thanks! Yes, I made the mistake of stating $2,000 down since that is what I estimate my trade in to be. I will state $0 down going forward. I appreciate your advice!

You can have them write you a check for your trade. Or see what Carvana, vroom or carmax will give you.

Are there any other SUVs I should be considering in my search? AWD, 3rd row and heated/leather seats are a must. But would like to keep monthly payments as close to $350 as possible. Thanks!

Obligatory Infiniti QX60 recommendation, especially since you live outside of NY and can do MSDs (use trade in to fund MSDs).

Land Rover Discovery Sport.
I have had mine for 3 years and love the 3rd row option along with the climate control seats (heat and ventilate).
Drives thru anything a modified Jeep can !!
This was taken at the Land Rover Off road experience center in Monterey, CA:

An Infiniti and Land Rover would be a dream but the monthly payments would be much more than $350 with zero down.

Ford Flex and Kia Sorento.

A base highlander or 4Runner will be in your price range. Both have 3 rows available

Ford Explorer or Infiniti QX60.

Hey @nyclife, I am a new member and would like to contact you via DM but it seems I cannot do so. Can you sent me a message? Would be interested in car lease support by you. Thank you!

I love the QX60, but does that really lease for $350 a month?

For comparison sake, I got my 2018 SE with 1k out of pocket, 293 tax included for 12k a year from Galpin. This is when they had the $500 cert, so technically it was $1500 out of pocket, but still paying less with a lesser out of pocket.

Thanks for the comparison! Can you please let me know when you leased? I am having trouble getting the quotes any lower.

July of this year. I don’t have my lease agreement handy, so I can’t post specifics unfortunately.

My sales guy did mention the lease itself was a loss for the dealership (and not a money maker on the backend) but they were pushing inventory to get the quarterly bonus from VW. Not sure how true this is and I didn’t really care, just wanted the deal. I’ve typically gotten my cars from Galpin when possible since they have ridiculous inventory and usually have the car I want and I can negotiate the lease I want.

I will typically email all local dealers, take the lowest price and let other dealerships get into a bidding war. Some dealerships don’t like this (VW DTLA) so I just cross them off my list.

Thanks!! Very helpful info!

Why don’t you search the forum instead of expecting people to answer every question?
