You are right. It’s a slightly weird design. However the compartment can House an iPhone X/8 plus. Car play goes active right after the phone is connected. So I use the console to access the phone while charging

The n the Levante there is a little pocket in the first compartment that you can fit a Samsung Galaxy 9+ into if you want to close the cover. You slide and lay the phone flat. The phone may overheat so you keep it open. The SUV is amazing you will love it.
