2017 Mazda3 Sport lease price

Hello, all,

My wife and I are new to car buying/leasing and are currently looking at the 2017 Mazda3 Sport. The dealer we’re looking at has a sale price at $18,279 from $20,730 MSRP. I’ve used the Lease Calculator to try to figure things out, but I’m wondering how accurate it is and how it can help me in negotiations with the dealer.

Just a head’s up that I have a general idea of how to approach leasing, such as negotiating the price of the car first, then the lease and being aware of extras in fees. Here’s what I’ve come up with below. I don’t know if there are any incentives or post-sale rebates, so I’m just going with what I can find and basing this off of the set sale price for now. I read a recent money factor of .00018 and a residual percentage of 53%. So should the price of the car per month really be around $200? If I’m wrong anywhere, please let me know.

Monthly Payment (Excl. Tax): $183
Monthly Payment (incl. tax): $200
Drive Off: $2,232
First month’s payment incl. tax: $200
Down payment: $1,500
Registration and doc fee: $368.15
Tax on cap cost reduction and fees: $163
Leasehackr Score: 7.7 years
Disposition Fee: $300
Total Lease Cost: $9,347

Acquisition fee: $595
Months/Miles: 36/12k
9.75 percent sales tax

Thanks.

With a Mazda you can aim for about 6% off MSRP before any rebates. Have you tried Truecar?

Hi Ed, the Truecar average in my area is at $17,540.

Problem isn’t the sale price. They are making it up on the back end. Most likely an elevated money factor. Best thing to do is get money factor and rebates and residual, use the lease calculator, and give them your price, showing your work so they know you know how it works. Do this with many dealers and offer the best price that you get to the other dealers to match or beat. You will quickly see where the bottom of the market is.

Ignore the average. Actually go through the process. My offers were miles better than my area average.

Will submitting for quotes through Truecar likely net better sale prices? I’ve always just called myself, but I guess that’s the wrong way about it.

I find it useful as a starting point when negotiating with any dealer. My local nissan were at $2k below invoice before rebates on the rogue and pathfinder when going through truecar. That is pretty much as good as it gets.

You were definitely right. The best deal I secured as a starting point is $17,187. That’s more than $1000 off the original sale price. Using the Lease Calculator, it looks like I’m on the right track to paying way less than anything previously offered (one tried to pull $295 per month!). I figured I had to do far more homework and it looks like it’s paying off. Any other tips going in I would definitely appreciate it.
