Overall I had an OK experience with Shelly BMW - No fault to Ethan. Ethan was fantastic and was super easy to deal with.

If you are purchasing out of state I would NOT recommend Shelly BMW. Their finance and DMV department was extremely disorganized and never got me straight answers. I ended up filing a complaint with BMW corporate after talking to BMW FS, when they were no help titling the vehicle for me (BMW FS said that every dealership is required to have out of state titling services, Shelly BMW did not, and to file a complaint for a review)

I had asked for a temporary registration and or the vehicle to be registered up here and they said it couldn’t be done. They didn’t even know they transferred the Cali Registration into my name, which showed up yesterday. I called and verified it was legit with Cali DMV, and that is what I’m using until BMW processes the Title, and I can get a copy to register in WA.

Overall I’m happy with the payments and the vehicle, it’s a great upgrade from my 2007 328Xi, with 120k Miles.

Nice deal. Sounds like the out of state issues will take care of their willingness to ship their hackrworthy deals.

The thing was they registered the vehicle in CA without even knowing it, and didn’t tell me.

When I asked to get a copy of the title before it went to BMW so I can get a WA military temp registration, I was literally told “no, we’ve held up our end of the deal, that’s all on you.”

In the end it worked out, but they didn’t intend to fix it, I’m pretty sure they fixed it by accident.

How much did shipping cost? I’m looking at buying out of state as well. Did you coordinate it through the dealership?

Shipping was $1095, open, and was coordinated through the dealership. Shipping was super easy, and quick, only about 2-3 days. The cost was rolled into the payments, the $1095 in accessories. Otherwise it would have been cheaper.

I’m not criticizing you at all. If they didn’t know how to do an out of state deal, they shouldn’t have agreed to it.

Either way it’ll work out. BMWFS will send you a “moving” packet that you can take to the DOL office near you.

Yeah I agree. I already have the moving packet “ordered” once they process the title. The bad parts of the experience were all on the back-end, It wasn’t on the salesman at all. Ethan did a great job, and was very responsive. He could only do so much.

Because it was a former loaner the vehicle received plates in CA. Because the plates are attached to the car in CA and not the person, that is probably where the confusion came from.

In WA plates belong to the person.

I had similar issues when buying my S90 out of state. Dealer couldn’t register it in my home state. I had to obtain a Power if Attorney from Volvo Financial, which was easy, but interfacing with the dealer to get the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, which is also required to register the car, has been a total black box. The dealer should have it, but they keep telling me they are working with their Volvo rep to get it. I remain skeptical it is coming anytime soon.

My wife’s X3 was purchased out of state and we had none of these issues. The plates took a little longer so they gave us another temp tag, and the registration came in just my wife’s name, but it was all fixed with a few phone calls and waiting.

I had no reason to fear purchasing out of state, so I didn’t think anything about it.

I’ve bought out of state previously too, from CA, with no issue. Some of the high volume stores do it all the time and have experience with it. Others don’t and simply refuse to do the deal unless you come in person to sign and take delivery. Others simply refuse to do out of state period.

Dealers with nationwide networks (Penske, Autonation, etc.) are surely better equipped. Local chains, as in my case, not so much.
