Not gonna disagree…but it is a drivers car that you can lease of under 800. Good value was not part of the criteria.
You know what some people on LH think is a good value? A base Macan.
At 5xx a month yes it is
Depends once u add in the Upfronts: dealer, bank, broker, dmv, tax
Some of those macans rang up to $1k
lol there is levels to this
Once he saw the payment he said hell no maxed MF
Had another dealer tell me straight up “yeah I rather sell it to an employee at that deal than you”
In one respect I agree- I put 80k miles on my 1M, many with TC off and sideways. Those were some of the most fun miles I’ve had on the road in a car, and a (manual) Z4 is far closer to that experience than the E-tron. But I’m not convinced sports cars always trump GTs- horses for courses. And I’ll argue the E-tron is a better performer in the “GT class” than the Z4 is a performer in the “sports car” class- there are lots of sports cars I’d grab the keys to before a Z4, but not nearly as many GTs I’d grab before an E-tron…
For me this always comes back to “what roads”? The 918 is an unbelievable car on the Autobahn or at a big track, but I frankly found it too much on nearly any US street or highway; for driving joy on a Sunday morning blast I’d take a 981 Spyder over it nine times out of ten. Would I take the e-tron for that? No chance. But for a trip on highway one to Big Sur, maybe with a little rain in the forecast, I’d take it over either. If you can answer how you get your kicks you can narrow the field.
I dont think anyone would disagree with this statement. However, the etron costs a lot more than a whole host of others so you’d expect it to be the better GT. How many sports cars cost less than a Z4 that you’d grab the keys to?
Right, but I think his point is that if you have the choice between the two at the same payment, the etron GT is a better choice given its relative position in its class, depending on what kind of driving experience you’re after.
Most of the miles I drive are on the weekends in canyons or just around town for the occasional errand or taking my dog to go hiking. Once or twice a year, I’ll take a weekend to go to San Diego / Big Bear/ something else a few hours away. The Vantage I am relinquishing on Friday worked beautifully for all of those needs (even the dog).
The M2 would meet those needs too, it’s just not good looking, and the price isn’t right. If I can find a dealer willing to make the price right, I suppose it’s my best option.
Im kinda in a different boat then you but also looking for a max $800/mo drivers car. EXCEPT I’d probably go for the etron because I have a 120 mile round trip commute everyday all on basically a straight highway haha.
Except there are no etrons to find anymore :(. The I4 m50 would have fit the bill but too I guess but those also have crappy lease deals right now.
Yea, get’s tricky as bring payment/ bang for the buck in, and of course that’s a moving target- the e-tron is no longer an $800 a month car…
I tend to think about best in class experiences. The Miata would make that list, as would various Boxster versions. The 1M/ M2 yes (agree ugly as sin and approaching M3 weight, but still the best you can do for that type of thing). The Z4 loses to the Boxster, a convertible Vette or Supra depending on how much power you need and how important the roof is- less or more money but local maximum driving experiences of different types imho- others who have different values ca certainly disagree.
What makes the E-tron GT lease so attractive in my mind is that it is a local maximum car or very close to it but at a price point completely out of scale with what it “should” cost for that driving experience- I’m comparing the ride, high speed stability, traction out of corners, etc to cars like the 911 turbo that cost 150k plus, not cars that lease for Toyota Camry money. Now don’t get me wrong- I don’t live in Germany (any more) and hence I’ll take the GT3 over the Turbo every day of the week (and did). I do prefer that more “sports car” experience over a supremely capable GT. But do I still enjoy and respect a GT with that level of competence? Clearly- if that’s a driving experience you prize it’s seriously good.
You knew that before the rental. So you’re back exactly where you started and I’m not sure what strategy you have that’s gotten you any closer to putting a car in your garage.
Right, that’s what I said. Not much closer and no real progress.
I was hoping that by testing one, I would either be unimpressed and thus eliminate it from contention entirely without looking back, or I would be so enamored with it that I wouldn’t care about the looks and couldn’t live without it.
Neither reaction happened.
Still bothering me…
If it were I… 2019-2021 BMW M2 comp (I’d get the manual, but the auto is supposed to be serviceable). Find one that you like from a dealer and you can likely get it CPO’d. 60 month used loan through a credit union at just under 6% gets you to ~800 a month with a nominal down assuming around a ~50k purchase price. ~$800 a month x 36 months plus 5k up front- $35k to own plus maintenance. But depreciation should be slow, and you might get well over 30k back for it at the end of ownership? Keep the miles down and you might get out for a lower month if you’re lucky?
Not nearly as ugly as the new M2… if you got a manual low miles car near the end of production and you kept the miles down I expect that car might appreciate in the long term, though not in your 3 year timeframe.
(Edit- don’t drink and do math).
My local BMW is showing a new '22 in stock. CarGurus says its the only one in the nation. I’m pretty sure I saw it on their showroom floor the last time was there this past summer. https://www.bmwofsterling.com/new-Sterling-2022-BMW-Z4-sDrive30i-WBAHF3C03NWX40724
Wonder if they’d blow this out even bigger than the 24% off deals.
That’s wild. Are you sure it’s not a paperweight?
