Wat? Doesn’t a lease agreement suffice?
This is practically a cottage industry in Montana, where in addition to no sales tax, there is also no requirement for in person inspection for registration. What you will need to do is setup a Montana LLC, the hard part is finding reasonable insurance coverage if your LLC has no history or credit. As a result, this is really only best for short term ownership, due to the cost of the insurance.
I owe u big Time. Let me look into this.
Do I need to purchase the vehicle from Montana?
You can purchase the vehicle anywhere, but you must use a Montana LLC to title the vehicle.
No idea if its the same for reservations but dealers on forums that offer low pricing won’t play ball with Montana LLCs /non OR residents.
I don’t do alcohol. Let me know the next best thing I can buy you for this information
Insurance agent can do an additional insured perhaps…or a BOP with vehicles.
Makes sense.
Just because it is legal in Montana to set this up does not mean your state wont prosecute for tax fraud. Many have and do.
So glad I found this thread just at the right time. Looking for some serious advice, as I wasn’t born and raised here, so not familiar with some of the things.

What is the ‘legalist’ way to register a car in Montana or OR? For Montana, I see an LLC is required. For OR, which might be easier for me, how do we establish residence? Should I just rent a cheap place for a few weeks and get a state ID?

Unrelated to auto LLC: Cousin back home runs an online shop on Amazon in Australia and UK. Wanted my help to setup here in US. Basically partner with me, I setup the LLC here and we run the business together. He recommended setting up LLC in TX or FL for tax purposes. The biz would be all online , no physical presence in my current resident state of CA.
Whats the best way to navigate this? More importantly, where do I read more about this and whom do I talk to to understand how to do this properly and legit?
Move to montana or or.
Really the issue isnt how you register it there. Its if you can drive it where you live on a MT llc registration long term. Thats going to depend on your state regulations.
Doesn’t having a residence in OR establish that?
The issue here isnt so much establishing the llc and registering it there. Its using it long term.
Its easy to register an llc in montana and register your car there. Theres nothing illegal about that. Its the bringing it back to the state where you live and using it there.
The legit way to register the car to a montana llc as an actual solution is to move to montana and stay in montana.
Youll have the same issue if you get residence and register the car that way. When you come back home, you cant just perpetually use the oregon registration address.
Up here even if you have a residence in another state, you must register your car in state if it stays here longer than 6 months + 1 day out of the year. It’s only a matter of time before a PITA neighbor gets mad at you for cheating the system and reports you.
Also as prior comments said - insurance will be an issue too if you don’t actually garage the car there.
Fair enough. Registering a car less than 12 months old incurs the full tax in CA. Anything older gets nothing
Hey, I wouldn’t recommend MT, go with Alaska. No sales tax for most major cities where lawyers are based, and less common than MT plates, and less known about.
I’ve been living in CA for 7 years and I’ve never seen once a MT plates. IL FL NY AND A TON OF MA
I’d say be careful going into this. Saving tax money is always in my best borat voice - very nice, but tons of exporters use Montana LLCs to dodge tax on their way out of the US - so some lawyers have been flagged for that.
