I mean when it comes to the stock market, nothing is 100% gurantee, and that’s why you should invest in what you know and passion about. Look at Peter Lynch- made a fortune off doughnut stocks back in the day haha
With this comment, I’m gonna out myself as the r/WSB’er of the group, but PLTR, SPCE, NIO, BABA, GME, TSLA, MRNA, and INAQ have been some crazy rides so far in 2020. EV stocks especially seem to be taking off recently.
My mentor’s advice - sell when everyone is gleaming, buy when everyone is cursing.
Happy to see a fellow r/WSB autist!!!
Positions or ban.
I laughed but my margin cost has been 1 - 1.5k a month. In January will be switching from Merrill Edge to Interactive brokers and their straight 2.59% margin rate for any amount borrowed. Anyone here using Interactive? Thoughts?
They are solid on execution for the most part and pay interest on cash, margin rates are good too. I’m still a bit sour about them peeing their pants during the crash and jacking up maintenance margins on futures. They executed a winner without notice because they got scared and costed me $20k for that day. Fuck them for that…but their trading platform is pretty nice so I’m still with them…for now.
Old post still kicking.
Having been through a few market “corrections” I dont have hardly any money in stocks, except Tesla and Nio. All my money goes into my own business, I know that doesn’t apply to everyone but it’s been my best investment and worth a thought. #2 best has been multi-family real estate investments. Don’t flip, don’t even mess with single family stuff. Apartments. Beats everything I’ve encountered. Passive and easy.
Lol…you say that owning NIO which is x36 from what it was just a year ago? I get that the business may gives you less worrying and better sleep at night but for a for a business it’s hard to get the type of return NIO had recently.
I wouldn’t sit on that stock…take your money and run.
Haha. When I say I own no stock, I pretty much mean it. It’s $2500 in each of those two! And I only bought in 4 months ago! So rolling around in a bed full of hundreds will have to wait. Lol
But the real estate thing is what made me give up on securities. I can link people I’ve worked with if any interest.
I exited the rental market prematurely in 2016 but I’m sure glad I don’t have to deal with all the Covid rental restrictions of today. I can’t imagine having to deal with a deadbeat tenant and be able to evict.
Brutal. I feel for you, brother. I read about their harsh “auto-liquidation “ policy. I’ll be keeping a tight rein, for sure. Thanks for the info. I’m definitely transferring but that 5-10 day gap of not being able to trade scares me. I’ve gotten whacked in Decembers past, so will be doing it in January. Happy trading.
Yep…early to mid Jan is when i would take a few days break from the market if i had to. It’s historically a weak time period for the market. You could protect with calls and not miss anything. Transfer some $, open the calls, sell the rest and transfer, open the positions and close the calls.
Edit: they may have positions transfer…did you talked to them about this?
@Cody_Carter Interesting read…
Excellent advice, thanks, appreciate it! Haven’t spoken to them yet but plan on doing full ACATS with existing Position Transfer (did it once before, years ago, and it worked fine).
I use IB. Definitely use Pro if you have over $10K. My margin rate is 1.2%.
Lol. I was thrilled with 2.59%! That’ll work, thanks!
I have used margin but usually for very short term and try to stick to under 20k for some potential swing. How much margin do some more experienced traders use? Worth it to switch brokerages but also how effective has your margin strategy been in the years of trading. Just trying to gauge if i should borrow longer term on some stocks i think could be for an upswing.
I use 1.8-2x leverage, with at least half the account in low risk funds (i.e., vym). I use a separate account for trading.
I’ve only been margined since March. I hadn’t borrowed pre-COVID but went in and almost maxed out my account. Ideally, I’d like to wean myself off using margin but so far so good. The best rate I could get was 6.125% so transferring my account to Interactive is a no-brainer for me, even if I eventually (hopefully) come off margin and revert to 100% cash.
