What to buy for $200k

I have saw some hackers that got it for MSRP, sure it’s not easy but even a little above MSRP 10% I say is not bad at all given the car you get

At that price point, my only advice is to get a car you will enjoy driving.

A few questions:

  1. How long do you plan to keep the car?
  2. Are you paying cash or financing?

That’s a lot of $$ even for a Corvette with 1250 bhp that can do 0-60 in under 2 seconds.

It is about half of your budget but I would get the LC500 convertible. Gorgeous design, high quality interior, but most importantly last n/a v8 car that is pretty much discontinued in the entire Lexus/Toyota lineup. It should hold its value and be pretty reliable too. Not sure if there is a more special car within the $200k range and even if there is one, it would be diminishing returns beyond the LC.

991.2 GT3 Touring. This is what I’d get because I’m a sucker for a car that has a good manual and does it all without skipping a beat.

Edit: I think this is an even better fit for you now that I read your original post.

  1. You’re already in the Porsche ecosystem.

  2. GT3 Tourings are just an experience. I lack words to formulate a description that perfectly conveys what I mean but I think you should test one of those out to see what I mean.

  3. They’ve held value in most cases, and end up appreciating in most cases.

  4. They’re mostly simple to maintain. 991.2 fixed the rod bolt and valvetrain issues so you’re only dealing with consumables (which can be pricey, but compared to everything else, relatively reasonable).

Do know, I’m biased and projecting my dreams on you (LOL), but I have a feeling that you’ll end up liking this quite a bit.

Wouldn’t trust J&S and George Aliba. They’re a bunch of grifters that are contributing to everything that is wrong with the market imo.

  1. I always say forever but it usually ends up being about a year. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: But, every time, I also say this next car will be different
  2. Cash

I had considered the LC for all the reasons you stated. I’m not sure it would satisfy the “exciting” checkbox enough. I probably should go drive one.

Definitely not a Corvette guy.

I’m hard wired to worry about depreciation. I don’t mind losing some but I wouldn’t want to be the guy that loses $80k in 2 years by buying a new RS ETron at MSRP during COVID. Or the guy that lost $50k in a year by paying over MSRP for a Cybertruck.

I agree with this but I’m more of a numbers person, not mechanical. I know nothing about repairing vehicles and any “odd sound” coming from a 10 year old car would probably cause more stress than it’s worth. Unless it’s something really rare like an LFA, Z8 or CGT (way out of my $$$ range).

I don’t like wearing fedoras :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Agree this will hold it’s value but I’m looking for something a little nicer.

If you are a cash buyer; I don’t know why you don’t just get something that is more of a classic or iconic? That would set you apart from everyone else in their bright colored supercars.

Sounds like you have made up your mind on choices:

Not really. I’ve eliminated the 992.2 GTS. After the F California suggestion, I went down a rabbit hole on a 296 GTB…but have similar concerns about market acceptance of the hybrid engine.

Also started considering another NSX since I’ve always been relatively happy with that car in the past. Will also test drive an LC.

I owned a 2023 R8 RWD. Bought it new and it was definitely special. You can’t go wrong with an NA V10.

Doing it over again though I’d probably do a V10 Plus instead. Shorter gearing, more dynamic driving experience- drives less like a grand tourer.

Another option you should consider is a Viper. Never driven one but a third gen viper checks off a lot of boxes- NA V10, manual, and a little more refined compared to the original vipers. They’ve obviously already had their run in value but last I checked they’ve come down to earth a little and you can get a nice GTS sub $150k. Definitely a safe bet depreciation wise IMO.

Have not read the whole thread, so maybe it was already mentioned, but AMG GT 63?

Like the car. Also like the SL63. Ugly depreciation on both.

I’m not a good enough driver for a Viper. And the hood is too long for me. Looked at one closely a long time ago…back when I could’ve gotten it for $80-90k.

I took a quick look based on another similar comment. Pretty hard to find a clean example. I’d probably prefer a newer one where I can still get some warranty. But I’ll keep looking.

Why does this matter? I sound like @IAC_Scott

I don’t think a GTS will solve this too much other than being faster. Why not a proper GT car like a GT4 RS or a 991.2 GT3? They will not depreciate much, if any, and you will get the excitement factor.

GT4RS would be a great choice around $200k for this

saw a 911 touring at my office today, looked pretty sweet. Truth be told, not clue what they sell for but it looked awesome.
