What should I negotiate with dealer first, selling price or directly monthly payment?

Being new to leasing, this is one of the things I like. If you do your research, the only variable is how much the dealer is willing to discount it. When you’re buying, it’s more difficult because incentives can be different depending on who you finance through, and dealers will discount more with certain financing because they get a kickback and you have no way of knowing what that is.

With leasing, I like to draw up and present the whole deal. With buying I’ve always tried to get a certain discount off MSRP and assume that I can finance at the rate my credit union provides. Then there is sometimes additional negotiation if the dealer wants me to use different financing. As long as at the end it comes out to a reasonable selling price, no BS fees, and finance charges in line with the best I can do on my own, I don’t really care who we use and what numbers they need to tweak to get there.
