The underlying assumptions used in their analysis are inaccurate and cherry-picked. For example, they assume cars will be on the road after 40 years, when the average age of vehicles in the US is 12 years old. And it doesn’t factor fuel savings of more efficient vehicles; fuel is one of the biggest expenses of running a vehicle, right after depreciation. To claim that reducing fuel economy standards will save lives and save consumers money is a stretch.
Also the notion that existing standards are unachievable is not rooted in fact; manufacturers have all been moving towards the same goal, and this doesn’t create the regulatory certainty we need. If anything, it penalizes the billions in investments towards electrification which were planned years ago. I love cars, but I also like clean air!
This administration will tell you that removing seatbelts and airbags will make cars safer if you replace all that nonsense with “MyPillow”.
