Was This Finally “Peak Insanity” in Used Vehicle Prices? And all other crystal ball questions

Why are air cooled Porsches (which lose to a modern Camry 0-60) $60k and higher? Certain cars just become the IT thing and people pay stupid money for them.

Living paycheck to paycheck. Wife has a fiend who is that article. Both of them make $100kish. Always broke. Because e they spend every penny they make and then a bit more. They own a $140k boat for starters.

What’s the delta vs a Mustang GT?

Not MSRP to MSRP, but transaction prices.

Probably 3-5k. Or even an ecoboost mustang is probably net cheaper than an Si and a better driving experience, quite a bit quicker.

Except that it is more socially acceptable in automotive circles to drive a 4cyl, turbocharged, FWD, Civic Si, than a 4Cyl, turbocharged, RWD, Mustang. LOL! I don’t want to start a Civic Si vs. Base Mustang debate. This isn’t the place for that.

I do agree with @Dinab that a Civic Si is a really nice package at MSRP, but no way would I pay $40K for it.

I’m not sure about that on a TCO basis, since the Si ought to hold value much better. Obviously your depreciation is also going to depend on how much you pay OTD.

I went through a similar process trying to justify a Forte GT as a cheap 6MT somewhat fun car. It’s the cheapest in the class of ‘hot hatch’ sedans on the purchase price, but resale value and thus depreciation negated a lot of those ‘savings’

Socially acceptable in terms of like fuel efficiency or what ? I feel like the drivers of these cars are somewhat in the enthusiast or beginner enthusiast category and for me, it just seems somewhat inherently paradoxical to pursue a fwd car if you’re in that position.

Interesting discussion, idk I kinda debated simile for myself like max said.

@jxr006 did you come with receipts this morning?

how about driving base corvette?

Socially acceptable in automotive circles as in “don’t bother with a Mustang unless it is a GT” crowd.

But in reality, why even bother suffering with the terrible interior or build quality of a Ford product unless you can enjoy that sweet v8. I remember a few years ago one of the top car magazines tested a GT with track package against an m3 on the track and they had the same exact (like literally everything including skidpad numbers) performance metrics but the mustang was like 60% of the cost of the m3. So when it comes to the mustang, I’d have to agree, v8 or skip.

I agree. If you’re getting a Mustang, make it a V8. There are plenty of other cars that’ll match an Ecoboost’s performance without the sissy image or the compromises (2-door, etc). I think I’d go Elantra N over an Ecoboost Mustang.

UBS analyst Patrick Hummel wrote in notes to investors Monday (today) that he expects the U.S. automotive industry to be challenging for the foreseeable future following record profit amid low supplies and high demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

He predicted “it will take three to six months for the auto industry to end up in oversupply, which will put an abrupt end to a 3-year phase of unprecedented” pricing power and profit margins for the automakers. and high demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

At least there’s an end to the shortage in sight.

Two words.

TBH I’d respect an ecoboost driver who gives zero Fs about image way more than some GT driver whose primary consideration was “What will others think?”

Not sure a civic interior is better than a mustang. With the new civic model that is probably true at present but kinda apples to oranges. Would imagine new mustang to be on par.

If you can can you include at the top what they bought it for?

Toyota is offering 2.49% financing on a bunch of 2022s. Given banks are 4%+ that’s a pretty decent incentive. Another data point that the madness is over.
