Was This Finally “Peak Insanity” in Used Vehicle Prices? And all other crystal ball questions

Honda is only down by 40%

Except for Ridgeline being up 200%

Saw a car ad with something I can’t remember seeing in a long time. A promo. It was for Chevy trucks and a low interest rate offer. That’s a big signal to me that the insanity is just about over.

We’ll know in two months, I bet.

GM and FCA/whatever it’s called are getting crushed

Alfa finally giving big discounts after not moving any units in 4 months

Nissan guys blowing my phone up too (gave info by accident via truecar) - looking rough out there

Might be a good time to hit up the local Nissan shops again that didn’t need help moving metal at the beginning of the year.

Hope to be back in the Volvo game again shortly since you mention it. Stay tuned!

Shouldn’t be too hard to get in the Volvo game, one of the worst selling brands in the US with sales falling for 12 straight months

My 2020 Volvo XC90 T6R with 29k miles sold to dealer on 4/20 for 46k
Listed at 54,999
Dropped to 52,999
Dropped to 50,999
Dropped to 49,999
Now at 48,999 with a car for best price
Pushing 4.5 moths of it sitting there. ’

I think I’m officially calling a top to all of this!

And got a follow up call from Lexus this week from my March inquiry…“Sorry to get back to you now but if you are still looking…”

Dang. Even after 4.5 months, they are still trying to make 3k on it. I’m not in auto selling business so not sure if this is just breakeven price at this point or profit.

I’ve been seeing more Volvo’s  than ever before

Not sure how many brands had year over year growth over past 12 months/any positive month over month growth for past year. For example, Toyota has had negative month over month growth for past 12 months. Volvo’s YoY growth for past 10 years has been pretty good.

That said, Volvo’s problem isn’t a mystery. From “Alexander Edwards, president of Strategic Vision, a research and consulting firm that surveys hundreds of thousands of new-car buyers annually.”

“ Volvo must also confront shifting demographics. “The consumers who are innovators, and who are buying for aesthetics, are always in emerging markets and ethnic minorities. This is especially true of Black car buyers in America,” Mr. Edwards said, citing data. “One thing that Volvo has suffered from is being a very white, college-educated — if not the professor — brand. They’ve started to finally bring in diversity in a positive way, but not as well as their competition.”

Mr. Edwards took a firm stance on this issue. “They really need to think about who the U.S. consumer is going to be in 10 years. The next group of luxury buyers is going to look fairly different from how they look today, and Volvo is not top of mind for those buyers.”

Edit - Most LH dont care about this. We are far far more informed than the average buyer and wiling to be flexible to get a good car at a great price. The average car buyer doesnt work think that way. They pick a car they want, do 15 minutes of research and go into dealership to buy the car.

There was a thought that rising rates start to affect floor plans at dealerships, so… could they get motivated to move metal and lower prices faster? Since it not only auto loans become more expensive for buyers but also for dealerships to keep cars on lots.

Right now it’s more about keeping the turn rate up (at least with my stores) than hitting floorplan costs.

One insight or area that we do not have access to is what floor plan rate dealers are paying. During Covid it was reported that the rate was heavily subverted or incentivized. I wouldn’t be surprised if some captives are still at least incentivizing rates based on performance metrics or ordering requirements.

I also think their is still a world of people out their walking in and the fact it’s $300 more month while annoying, still doesn’t stop them from saying, I’ll take it.

Yup. Being dumb is still legal

That’s floorplan for New cars.

Used cars is what’s starting to fall…new cars still got a ways to go.

Most of my Toyota and Kia dealers consistently have less then 10 new cars in stock. Lots are full of used vehicles still

Sitting at ~15 per shop average without a commited buyer but it’s also end of month.
