I’ve been reading the forum for the past week and getting really pumped on negotiating for this new tiguan. Honestly I am not really sure where to start, I have the business card of the sales guy who showed me the car do I email him or do I email the internet sales person?
Do I dive right in and ask for 15% off MSRP off the first email?
I don’t have the equation pieces such as money factor, should I ask for that before asking for the money off so I don’t scare him off and let him know I am serious?
I am really just wondering what the best practices are for emailing to get the deal figured out and don’t want to blow it the first time.
Thanks guys!
For reference I live in orange county, Ca
The tiguan MSRP: $28,400
Scour the VW forums to figure out at what % off MSRP it is selling to know where to start. You’d get shot down pretty quick if they all go for 10% or less and you start off at 15% though it’s worth a shot. Edmunds should give you an idea of RV and MF. If you have VW Partner Program access through work, you’ll probably be able to get a further discount but I’m not sure if you can get a discount on top of your lowest negotiated price or it’s a straight up partner discount. Per the program rules, it states:
Your purchase price will be that of the Dealer Invoice less $500*. No negotiating! No hassles! Plus, you may qualify for additional special incentives.** Upon request, the dealer will show you the Vehicle Invoice Price to ensure it complies with the program stipulations. Verify the pricing and sign the certificate where indicated.
Maybe someone can chime in here to clarify the PP discount.
Where I live Tiguan discounts are more in the ~20% range right on the dealer sites. For example
2018 Tiguan S MSRP 25.495. Love it price 19762
2018 Tiguan SE MSRP 28550 Love it price 23078
2018 Tigaun SEL AWD 33745 Love it price 27600
And they have a button to get the special e-price so I have a feeling there is a couple hundred more out. Or if you are eligible for some special program. All the dealers in the area are in that ballpark. They all also hit you with a 600-700 doc fee. Obviously things like can be a bit region specific (I am in a metro area with multiple dealers).
you can find RV, MF and average off msrp online before emailing anyone or setting foot inside a dealership. Remember to be polite but confident, KNOW the programs you qualify for and first negotiate the sales price before incentives, be crystal clear about this. With that you can take the rebates/incentives you qualify for (the dealer is NOT taking a hit by just applying those) and from there its simple math using MFs and RV (along with concepts you will read about like adj cap cost, etc).
Do not put money down, compare apples to apples by separating a)the rent charge and the depreciation charge (read this sites article on how to calc lease payments by hand) and b)everything else (doc fee, acquisition , taxes, etc).
Those prices don’t include grad, military or first responders. They specifically list those as additional rebates that some people may qualify for. There also isn’t public rebates (i.e. the 2500 or 0% APR) that I am aware of in the area. Can’t comment on the incentives that are not made public and while they don’t list a requirement to finance, you never know. Note that VW did lower the Tiguan MSRP on most trims about a month ago. I don’t know if these models have the old or new MSRP. In general VW’s have had pretty large discounts since diesel gate.
But i can tell you if I was buying the tiguan, I would be asking them to justify every penny above the price they advertise. Sometimes it is somewhat reasonable (i.e. the 2500 incentives for buying versus subsidized interest). Sometimes it is just good old bait and switch:). Figure out what the car should cost before starting. And it is always easier to go up than down. If you offer 15 and they would have taken 20, you aren’t getting that money.
I just bought a VW GTI from Virginia last week. drove it back to Texas. saved over $3000 . The one thing that the VW dealers in VA do is have huge FEES. Expect to add $3000+ on the advertise prices. BUT, the prices are still low. I am trying to lease another vehicle , but if the Tiguan gets to $17k out the door. i might just buy
Can you list those fees? The dealers all have high dealer fees (600-800 bucks) and a few makers have regional advertising fees but I don’t remember seeing anything else. VA does have a high car tax rate though but I wouldn’t have though you were paying that.
Destination 895, doc 699, taxes, etc… about $3000 total over advertised. could be has high (depending on dealer) as $4500 over advertised. Most have Military $500, Grad $500 and VPP $500 built in to the advertised price also.
I was thinking more what fees are VA specific and not general (i.e. destination and I assume you don’t pay VA taxes but the state you are registering in) that you will pay in pretty much any state. Other than the absurd dealer profit fee (600-800 bucks is pretty standard. It is amusing causes a couple miles over the border the law limites dealers to 300 bucks. It makes comparing dealers a bit of a pain), I am not aware of any.
As far as advertisting, it goes both ways with some of the dealers including the money that basically no one will get (how many recent college grads are there that are also first responders?:)) and a few others that leave them off. It is a real pain. But the transparency compared to the mid 90s is great.
