VW ID4 availability and future resale

Definitely not keeping the ID4 if I end up buying, my current EV6 is a better EV. Standard range with the $37.5K MSRP is a great value though and a guaranteed flip due to being one of the cheapest new generation EVs on sale today, especially if tax credit is in play.

It depends on the market. Back when I bought my ID.4 last fall (2021) resale was poor. I wanted to dump it due to numerous glitches. I barely broke even in a trade after the tax credit. Demand wasn’t there compared to Mach-Es and Teslas. I know because I traded into a Mach-E which I traded for a RAV4 Prime when that magically became available. I was getting offers well above MSRP for the Mach-E but ID.4 demand was so low I was getting $5K to $7K below MSRP offers. It’s just a soccer mom EV that’s cheap. You don’t get folks with deep pockets wanting to overpay for one like a Mach-E.

Fast forward a year and the ID.4 is slightly in more demand but if they are cranking them out in TN then you might be competing with thousands of new ID.4s that are eligible for the tax credit.

Supposedly they want to build 7000 per month. I suspect resale will be in the toilet if they do get that number.

Got my email too and placed the order today. Let’s hope it comes in this year.

Interestingly ,got my email yesterday as well, so seems like a bunch went out. Also rolled the dice to see if it arrives before Dec 31st. $30k EV won’t be bad if it gets here in time. The new Bolt is substantially nicer than the old one, for $37k you can get a loaded Bolt EUV with leather, roof, power seats, super cruise, etc. Without the rebate the ID.4 starts to make less sense. Assuming on Jan 1, the ID.4 and Bolt both qualify for at least $3750, the Bolt has more features for less $.

Let’s see when they start trickling in.

Aren’t 23’s from Tenn arriving on lots now (slow trickle)?

I used to own a chevy bolt, the seats were horrible, the back seat is also very narrow, the trunk space is a joke.
Only positive thing over id4 is the quicker acceleration

Check out the 2023 Bolt EUV, longer, bigger back seats, upgraded interior, wider and cushier seats. They basically fixed every criticism from the previous model.

$35k before potential rebates (starting Jan 1), loaded. The ID.4 will have to really step it up at $37-38k

My ID.4 is on the ship form Germany and should arrive to Houston few weeks from now ! Contacted the dealer for pricing but he says he cannot give the price until it reaches to mainland US. He also told it is not eligible for tax credit as it been manufactured out of USA !

Any one know if this is true ?

It is not eligible for the tax credit since final assembly was outside of North America. The only exception was for folks that had a binding contract to buy signed prior to August 16, 2022. Since you do not even know the pricing, it appears you did not have a binding contract.

Actually, the 23 Bolt EUV starts at $28k now. The more loaded Premium trim starts at $32k.

How is this a question? If you have a binding agreement doesn’t that mean you have to take both cars?

I assume you didn’t get a signed binding agreement by 8/15?

Are Bolts available in your area at MSRP? When I last checked (contacted over 20 dealers on East Coast), there were 0 available for MSRP.

Dealers had cars listed online but they were either ā€œinboundā€, over MSRP, or on stop sale due to recalls.

Funny you ask, I just got texted twice last week for Bolt EUVs at MSRP at my local dealer… they were both cancelled orders… and were re-sold within an hour.

If you have time, you can order one… and if you’re lucky and have enough feelers out, a dealer might hit you up with one.

In the last month, I saw 2 Mach-Es deals that sold for only $5k over MSRP which is really good considering the 23 prices are higher than that AND people may not qualify for the Fed credits next year.

I finally have dealers contacting me about Lightnings, but they are all Lariat trims and want $15-20k over.

There seems to be more availability now because I’m getting contacted by more dealers whereas before they were radio silent.

My VW dealer where I bought my 2021 ID.4 has 12 ID.4s on the lot (only one 2023). The loss of the tax credit has hammered new sales. And no more $7500 cap reduction on leases.

I saw the same thing with Polestar. When I took a test drive in Sept… I saw a dozen cars on the tiny lot. Folks are not paying $60K+ for an EV sedan that has a $35K-$45K car feature set.

I’m trying to figure this out as well. I did some searching and found a dealer that has a cancellation that is on the lot right now. It’s a 2023 ID.4 Pro S AWD with a MSRP. They are willing to discount it $100 and pay for my airfare to pick it up. But, I just need a car for 6 months to hold me over. From what I am reading I can get the $7,500 tax credit since it’s made in USA and I am picking it up before 1/1/23. My state doesn’t have an incentives for EV. So, break even would be about $51,000. I feel that is a big gamble on what the market will do as I am seeing used car values drop. What I got for my 2022 RAV4 Prime XSE was $58,835 in September and now $52,350 from Carvana.

What model year? 2022 or 23?

It’s a 2023. They are out there. I’ve found several dealers that have cancelations. All are charging markups/mandatory add ons except this one. There’s one in DFW that is only charging $800 for tint and door edge film. It’s on the ground also. Red and black 2023 ID.4 Pro S AWD. MSRP is $53,735 + $800 for adds. I passed on that one.

Yeah there’s no way the ID.4 holds the same value as a RAV4 Prime.

2023s are cranking out of TN factory and there will be a tax credit for them in 2023 (we assume - probably half at least) and it’s not like the ID.4 is some class leading EV because it’s not. The R4P is a unicorn (owned two). The ID.4 is only sought after because it’s cheap and available - much like the Bolt. I think the Ariya, EV6, Ioniq 5 are vastly better EVs. Without the tax credit, they’ve suddenly become $8K to $10K more expensive.

The first trucks of 2023 ID4s started arriving last week. Many higher performing dealers received an extra allocation of a Pro S AWD. I found one at the dealer where I also have 2 Standards on order. Agreed to the purchase price (MSRP) and my trade value. At the last minute, they required me to buy $2200 of crap. So I walked.

Found another extra allocation at another VW dealer and bought it. I had to buy $1000 of crap (tint and fabric protection) but at least I got $500 more for my trade.

Like @stearicom, I only need this car for 4-5 months until my next i4 arrives. My BE is $48k after tax incentives and I’m pretty confident it will still wholesale at $50k. Even though Nashville has massive capacity, VW is still running into major parts shortages as they cut their forecast for 2023.
