Hey guys, I’m shopping around for a used “fun” car with a trade in (car is in FL and I’m in TN), I’m in the initial stages of the negotiation (buyer’s order is for the price that’s listed online, which is about $900 above CARFAX estimate) - I just wanted to see their fees, which seem really high.
My CARFAX trade-in by VIN estimate is $24.5k with $20k payoff. The car in the buyer order been sitting on the lot for 2 months. I want to negotiate the price down and negotiate both the doc and title fees. How far down can I negotiate this? I’m also fine to walk away as I don’t “need” it.
Fees are on par with florida dealerships. That is how they get you in the door – low ad price followed by $3k in junk fees which will not be removed. How does the price of this car compare with others? You would come out ahead paying $50k for a local one versus “$48k” in FL + their fees + shipping
Whenever I don’t like fees or feel they are high, I usually ask for a higher discount off the selling price to offset. I usually do this the first time I submit an offer, not at the stage you are at but it doesn’t hurt to ask for more of a discount on the car.
I haven’t started to negotiate, I just asked for an itemized list of out the door price to see their fees. Would it be reasonable to ask for 3k to 4k off the car if it’s $900 above CARFAX estimated value now?
I hope this is a m40i in purple and manual but I’m guessing not a manual.
Use visor.vin and see what the market is doing with this car. October I heard wasn’t great for dealers so maybe they can take some more off but the dealer fee is FL special. Like others said, it might not be worth it.
CarFax estimated value really isn’t going to hold any weight and is just what it says, an estimated value. How does their asking price compare to other similar builds, both local and nationwide?
And when it comes to negotiating I wouldn’t get into the weeds with the dealer about the fees or that you want another X% discount because they have a high doc fee etc.
No different than negotiating a new lease just make them an offer on the ‘Total Price’ line item, tell them you’re ready to move forward if they can get to $51k (or whatever number you settle on after some research).
You are in TN, so I assume you are going to register the car there. Your fees will be different except for dealer doc fee. Make them an offer that includes the doc fee and don’t worry about how they get to your price.
