Universal Level 2 charger recommendation

I have it, hardwired, works well so far and the cable seems well built, the app is a bit basic but most of the management stuff for me happens in the car anyway.

The important info is can you do scheduled charging through emporia apps? Some ev can’t do that through the car ex: Mini SE, EQB.

Yea I would definitely make sure the charger is long enough to reach your port. I know the chargepoint only comes with 25ft.

I stick with my suggestion of a 60A dedicated circuit and hardwire your unit so you can safely charge at 48A

Are there any extension cords for when you need more than standard 25 ft, or do you need a charger with longer cord if that turns out to be the case?

I believe the length is limited to the NEC/UL standard. I dont believe there is any certified/safe “extension” cables

One other thing that my electrician emphasized was the type of wire used for the circuit. He said to make sure to use THHN-THWN2 wire that is rated for 75A

One of the best value evses on the market for something feature capable, full UL listing, reasonably priced, strong customer support, etc.

It’s what I have in my garage.

The only thing that would drive me to something else is if I lived somewhere where my utility company offered a specific rebate on something like a charge point.

At the lowest level, as long as it doesn’t burn your house down, it will do the job. There are enough adapters and/or extension so that you can go from any to any plug type.

But usually, this decision is influenced by other factors-

  • Which evse does your utility allow for reduced rates.
  • Did you get a evse for free with your vehicle. Or can you score one cheap.
  • Are you planning to eventually add solar or V2G.
  • Does the evse have a good UX and robust management controls.
  • Are you a brand whore and it must have a Porsche faceplate.

My top 3-
Hardwired Tesla Wall Connector, the only option for solar/battery integration.
Hardwired Wallbox Pulsar Plus, my favorite UX, works with many utils.
NEMA/Grizzl-E classic, most rugged option, good for outside installs.

Sadly, I wouldn’t trust half the evses you can find on amazon to not start a fire. They’ve sold plenty of units with counterfeit UL/ECL markings before, units that are missing appropriate ccid hardware, units that don’t meet code, etc.

What was the Qmerit qoute? I am planning to lease a Lyriq that comes with $1500 credit for installation through QMerit and almost all of them say QMerit just hikes up the price by $1500 for no reason.

HD has some RV or generator extension cords rated at 50 A. No clue if they are safe or compatible with EV chargers though.

We did a bunch of research online, watched videos and looked at all options. Went with the ChargePoint Home Flex for the decent app, good build quality for the unit/cord/plug. The wall mount/cord storage/handle cradle are super strong and well-designed. Very satisfied with two of these charging at 48A on a 60A circuit for each.

Update: electrician went over my panels and it looks like I can’t have 60A dedicated circuit for charging. According to him my best and cheapest option to add charging to existing 60A circuit with some stuff already on it and limit it to 40A. Otherwise I’ll have to go thru upgrade to 200A service and that’s in thousands, which isn’t really worth for me.

I’ll do another assessment with Qmerit, but now the plan is to have charger circuit limited to 40A. The only downside as I understand is slower charging times.

For charger itself, main requirements now are:

  • must be fully weather proof as outside unit

  • cord length is 25 feet. I measured distance from the wall to the parking spot on the driveway and its 21 feet so need few feet of reserve.

I’m not an electrician, but here are my thoughts/questions:

I believe a 40A circuit will only safely charge at 80% of the circuit max for a 32A max charge.

Also not sure if you want a 40A rate/draw for the EV charger off a 60A circuit that is also being used for other items.

What else is inside/outside of your house on electricity now that is taking up so much on your panel and what size is your panel/service now?

Total cost for my job was $1600 which included running a new line from my basement, up a wall, through a breezeway roof and into my garage, plus set up etc. I’m sure you can find a cheaper option but Qmerit automates a lot of the quoting and helps with your rebate submission, warranty activation etc.
