Solar Hackr -- Now 2025

Yep. But at “escalating” utility rates, may end up paying more.

These are all scams. Only way solar made sense was if you could just pay for it. Now under nem 3 it never makes sense. If I were buying a house in Ca without solar I would add solar but keep it off the grid on a dedicated electrical panel.

Yes, but this is not as easy as it seems when you are still connected to the utility unless you rewire everything, have battery backup and a generator that runs off of natural gas/LP/diesel/gasoline for good measure.

I got two solar companies to kinda price match each other and was quoted $18k for a 9.5kw system, so it priced out to be about$1.9/watt here in FL. Utilities here charges $0.16/kwh, so payback definitely isn’t nearly as quick as states like CA, but I’m certainly leaning towards getting it before the 30% tax credit expires.

You’re still connected to the grid it’s just one directional. No point of exporting when they give you nothing for it. You import (if needed) during off peak rates.

You would still have to do an interconnect agreement with the utility, even if it zero export. If you have batteries, maybe EV to charge during sun hours, you would only ever export what you don’t use or store right away. One difference might be that they won’t force you into TOU plan without NEM, but you would probably want to be on TOU with batteries and EV charging.

Yes, you still need the interconnect agreement. I think code requires it in CA even if “off the grid” as well.

No, see above.
