[socal] DMV registration arrived with only 6 months validity

Hi Leasehackr,

We recently leased a loaner Mercedes EV(24 month contract) at the end of September. Strangely, the start date of new DMV registration we just got is this April. Asked the dealer and they said it’s registered at that time as a loaner car.

I’m not sure if it’s a loaner car issue but for us we’ll need to pay for an extra registration. Is it common to have DMV registration and lease date apart like this? Or should I ask the dealer to make up for it?

Registration in CA follows the car, not owner. Your loaner probably initially got registered in April. Guessing you didn’t have to pay full registration (only transfer), when you got it.

Very common. You bought a used car that was already registered. You didn’t pay registration fee on purchase, just a transfer fee.

Most rebates are for unregistered cars right? Wonder how that affects their lease

One way to look at it, is that you got 6 months free registration :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah, but they’ll be donating the last 6 mos of the last renewal to the next owner unless they get an extension. It’s basically a wash.

:joy: was trying to get OP to see the silver lining.

What makes you think that? I bet op paid for a full regs in his contract. Jon said that but we know dealerships, haha

Dealers can’t lie about DMV fees and taxes. If those are overcharged, they need to refund the buyer.

Well then OP, check your contract and see how much they charged for DMV

Should be something nominal ~$15

I think it’s $27 to transfer registration in CA

Thank you all for the info! I checked my contract again and there’s no registration fee and just $42 license fee, which seems not much. With that I guess paying a total of 2 registrations is not a big deal then.
