I’m thankful for your responses! I asked again my friend what happened here with the cap cost being 14k over. Her daughter had MB ADD in her JEEP debt! Unbelievable but true.
I got the real answer from my friend that her daughter had MB add in daughter’s old car debt of 14k.

Was it more or less ‘I just don’t want to make this payment anymore’?
This can be addressed in the settlement agreement.
May not help with the original trade line, only the collection account, depending on who currently owns the debt.
Sounds like negative equity and/or super high interest rate
