Registration renewal for the lease return (strange situation)

Agreed. Ground the car and avoid wasting $300+. You are overthinking this. You are dealing with a bureaucracy, throw common sense out the window and accept the world as it is.

I wish I could guys but as I just noticed it the earliest I can return will still be 1-2 weeks after registration end so looks like best way here is to pay it and keep using the car a bit more (and hope that one 4/32 tire will not wear out too much so they will not ask to replace them).

Or return it as is and see if DMV sends anything (but that can end up even more).

DMV isn’t going to help you in this situation (I see this happen a lot) I would speak to the finance manager that did your contract. You purchased the car on a certain day it should have been RDR’d on that day, if not a couple days after, not 2-3 weeks. Finance dropped the ball and you are going to have to pay unless you talk to them about it. It’s their responsibility to do the paperwork on time.

ā€œRDR – Retail Delivery Report is the official registration of a new vehicle with it’s manufacturer. The date is essential as it determines the qualifying date for program eligibility and in-service date.ā€

Just make an appointment to turn in the lease. Lease can be turned in slightly early as long as you made all payments.

think of it this way. what costs more

  1. getting a rental for your trip (or using another car)

  2. paying the registration renewal

  3. half a month cost of the lease.

#3 they gave you for free. So if #3 > #2 you are still coming out ahead. If #1 < #2, makes sense to rent. Otherwise, it depends on your personal taste.

It sounds like this is a personal choice of his, to keep the car. It also sounds like he’s looking for someone to tell him CA DMV will give him a grace on the registrar until he’s ready to turn in the car, which isn’t gonna happen. He can’t have it both ways.

For what it’s worth, Ford Credit never sent the California DMV a Release of Liability on my behalf when I returned my Focus Electric. I received a warning letter about overdue registration about a month after returning the car, filled out a Release of Liability at that point, and haven’t been contacted since.

Unregistered vehicle= uninsured vehicle

You got to be nutz!

Why can you do non-op registration - it will be a small fee. and just bring it to the dealer on the last date when your current registration expires…

Thanks for the info, but you returned before or on the day the title expired right?

I was asking if someone had a similar situation and returned the car a bit later and received anything from the DMV.

I will most likely pay 1 more year and extend the lease for 1-2 months (it’s 150 pm so not bad).

On another note, if you had an inspection with AutoVin and then return the car 1-2 months later will the dealer expect it again or they just use that AutoVin report?

They just use the initial auto vin report

Right, definitely a finance manager mistake, not sure if they will do anything now though considering how they work.

this is not true BTW, insurance still covers you https://www.carinsurance.com/kb/does-expired-registration-void-policy

Similar situation here. Lease is up a month after the registration is due. Because I had already purchased my replacement vehicle and was near my max allowed miles on the lease I just PNO the lease vehicle and let it sit in my driveway (the fricken dealers refused to deal with my request to drop it off earlier). So now I’ll get a one-day moving permit to move the vehicle from my place to the dealer (thank you AAA for the easy permit access) and see what happens. The AutoVin end-of-lease inspection did not log any issues with the registration. Fingers crossed.

So far so good. Dropped off lease at dealer and no mention of not being registered. The vehicle is PNO and I did get a one day movers permit to drive it to the dealer. Still waiting for the final bill to come in the mail…

How’d it go? Did your leasing bank or DMV say anything about the PNO?
